Clinician I – SMART (160)
Fresno, CA

The SMART Clinician will play a pivotal role in delivering timely crisis intervention and support services to children and youth in school settings throughout Fresno County. This position requires exceptional clinical skills, strong communication abilities, and a passion for serving the mental health needs of youth.

The School Mobile Access Response Team (SMART) is a critical initiative aimed at providing immediate crisis intervention, de-escalation, and triage services to children and youth, 21 years of age and under, within the Fresno metro and rural areas. Our team operates in collaboration with K-12 schools and aims to address mental health crises effectively and compassionately.

How will I contribute

  • Provide immediate crisis intervention, de-escalation, and triage services to children and youth experiencing mental health crises at K-12 school campuses.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of students' mental health needs and develop appropriate crisis intervention plans in collaboration with school staff and Student Resource Officers.
  • Utilize evidence-based therapeutic techniques to support students in crisis and facilitate stabilization.
  • Collaborate closely with school staff, Student Resource Officers, and community partners to ensure coordinated care and follow-up services for students in crisis.
  • Document all interactions, assessments, and interventions accurately and in a timely manner, in accordance with program protocols and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance clinical skills and knowledge of best practices in crisis intervention and trauma-informed care.
  • Act as a liaison between schools, mental health agencies, and other community resources to facilitate access to additional support services for students and their families.
  • May encounter risk of working with persons with SMI (serious mental illness) that may include, but not limited to persons in mental health crisis, persons that may be intoxicated or impaired by drugs or alcohol, persons who may be DTO (danger to others), DTS (Danger to Self), or GD (Gravely Disabled). If such situations arise, staff may be required to call local emergency personnel to help deescalate the crisis, use crisis intervention techniques, and consult with supervisor as soon as practically possible.
  • SMART operation hours are 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday -Friday, throughout the year including school breaks and vacation.
  • May be required to assist MCRT and CIT programs when school is not in session.
  • May answer, and triage calls for service, throughout the dispatch system.

What I bring

  • Master’s degree in social sciences or related
  • Class C Driving License Required
  • Current Associate Licensure ASW, AMFT, APCC. Must have a National Provider Identification (NPI) number or obtain an NPI number prior to start date.
  • Valid and Current BBS Number Required
  • 1 year experience providing crisis management and/or mental health services.
  • Working knowledge of community and hospital resources. Working knowledge of Windows based computer applications to include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft TEAMS and Internet access.
  • Ability to quickly develop rapport with individuals to resolve crisis situations. Ability to assess individual’s potential for dangerousness to self, others and/or grave disability. Ability to make a differential diagnosis between substance abuse and psychiatric emergencies. Ability to appropriately and immediately document client interactions. Ability to utilize computer technology and electronic health record. Strong communication skills and knowledge of crisis intervention, behavioral health and risk assessment.
  • Must possess independent clinical judgment and the ability to critically assess a situation for risk and response.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
