Position Overview
The Assistant Principal - High School Operations (HS Operations) plays an integral role on the school leadership team by directly managing and coordinating a variety of operational areas, including but not limited to, finance, procurement, technology, food service, facilities, school safety, recruitment/enrollment, and student information. Effective Assistant Principals of HS Operations manage school services in a way that creates an environment for students, teachers, and the rest of the leadership team to focus exclusively on student achievement and growth. Operations leaders work closely with the KIPP DC HDQ team, which builds Operations leader capacity by providing support, training, and coaching throughout the year.
The Assistant Principal - HS Operations role is an exempt position and will report to the Director of Operations with a dotted line to the HS Leader.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
School site operations:
  • Lead a high quality, responsive front office and administrative team, including the direct management of the ops team, office manager and coordination with other non-instructional employees
  • Provide support for all extracurricular activities and athletics events
  • Coordinate information technology services with internal and external providers, including communications systems, support, training, and equipment
  • Arrange logistics for special events such as parent nights, field trips, testing, and assemblies; act as the point-person for all on-site visitors
  • Liaise with HR to ensure that payroll, benefits, etc. are administered effectively to school staff
  • Ensure compliance on all local, state, and federal health & safety laws and workplace regulations
Finance & Procurement:
  • Actively support the school leader in developing a school budget that is accurate, feasible, timely, and aligned with student priorities
  • Recommend necessary budget adjustments, and track planned versus actual expenditures
  • Oversee adherence to all fiscal policies as governed by KIPP DC policy, or state and federal law
  • Conduct purchase request process for all materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Own school level contract and procurement relationships; service scheduling, implementation, and quality management; communicate regularly with KIPP DC HDQ team as needed
  • Supervise all auxiliary school services and third party personnel including safety/security, transportation, custodial services, facilities management, meal program, etc.
Student information, reporting, and assessments:
  • Ensure that student records are properly maintained and updated (e.g., parent contact information, attendance, grading, transcripts, etc.)
  • Lead the coordination of assessment administration, at the campus level, of SAT, MAP, AP, CAPE, and other assessments as they arise
  • Help with logistics and administration of student testing days, and ensure reports are delivered on time; provide regular data updates and analytics to the school leader and HDQ team as needed
  • Coordinate data for state, federal, and grant compliance reporting with HDQ teams
Recruitment & Enrollment
  • Supports student enrollment and audit processes; ensure school year begins with 100% enrollment
  • Organizes the student recruitment plan and mailings for all grade levels (including open houses and neighborhood canvassing with fliers and brochures).
Family Engagement:
  • Communicates regularly with families about their children's performance, school policies, trips, and events;
  • Builds and fosters relationships with community leaders and organizations, including maintaining a robust network of community organizations.
Facilities, Food Service, and Transportation/Field Trips:
  • Communicate need for renovation, maintenance, and upkeep to the HDQ facilities team
  • Track and conduct inventory of all school assets and property; maintain quality of equipment
  • Collaborate with HDQ team in school space evaluations and capacity planning
  • Manage day-to-day service and personnel issues with vendors and staff; highlight potential roadblocks to the HDQ team on issues with shared vendors
Athletics:
  • Verify that all athletes are academically eligible to participate in sports
  • Coordinate all operational and logistical aspects of athletic events, in conjunction with the regional athletics leader
  • Ensure compliance with KIPP DC policies, state/national regulations, and relevant governing bodies (e.g., PCSAA, DCSAA)
School Safety:
  • Collaborates with school security to ensure student safety through school security guard post-orders and position rotations.
  • Ensures that documentation for all drills and safety tests are maintained (CORE DC & Raptor)
  • Collaborates with administrative staff to establish emergency response teams, review protocols, and ensure the plan is updated as needed.
  • Collaborates with facilities teams to ensure all emergency equipment (e.g., fire extinguisher, smoke detectors, etc.) is in place and operational.
  • Ensures that the annual school response plan is regularly updated and reviewed, and the school's Emergency Response Team is aware of their responsibilities.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in business administration or related education field is preferred
  • 7 years of professional work experience required; at least 3 years experience in K-12 systems preferred
  • 3 years in a school operations leadership position or experience in school leadership (e.g., Principal, VP, or Dean) role required; alternatively 5 years in strategy/operations leadership role required; secondary experience strongly preferred
  • Experience managing multiple people and teams (i.e., functions) required
  • Experience managing a >$1M budget preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities
  • Proven project management skills as it relates to the creation of different systems and structures
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams across the organization
  • Ability to convey complex technical concepts and solutions to broad audiences
  • Demonstrates integrity, both in words and actions, and encourages ethical behavior and decision making
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
KIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package:
  • The anticipated starting salary for this position is $101,856-$125,821. At KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. When determining salaries we look at benchmarks in the education and non-profit sector.
  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
  • As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support which requires this position to be fully on-site. This role is currently required to be on-site or in schools during regular work hours.
