Position Overview
Manage KIPP DC’s revenue portfolio that includes Accounts Receivable and Grants Financial Reporting team while leading various management initiatives and systems implementation projects. The Director of Revenue/Grants Management is responsible for overall invoicing, collection, and cash application activities and timely management of all Accounts Receivable aging components. This role will direct initiatives to improve working capital, including account monitoring and ensuring effective and efficient processing of Accounts Receivable and Grant billing functions. This position is highly visible and requires strong leadership with the ability to prioritize, plan, and effectively direct the department. This an exempt position and will report directly to KIPP DC’s Controller and will be part of the Finance and Accounting (F&A) Leadership team.

Key Objectives

  • Facilitate the end-to-end grants management process for all grants. 90% of KIPP DC’s grants are federal and some grant funding comes from private foundations. KIPP DC systems related to grants management include Intacct, EveryAction, Vena, Anybill, and FloQast
  • Lead KIPP DC priority of identifying and implementing continuous improvements to the network’s grants portfolio life cycle management, including enhancing systems and processes facilitating effective collaboration across KIPP DC teams
  • Accomplish accounting and organization mission by completing related results as needed
  • Maintain financial security by adhering to internal accounting controls
  • Support financial planning by forecasting cash
  • Meet accounts receivable financial standards by providing annual accounts receivable budget information; monitoring expenditures; identifying variances; implementing corrective actions
  • Meet accounts receivable operational standards by contributing information to strategic plans and reviews; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; identifying system improvements
  • Accomplish accounts receivable human resource objectives by selecting, orienting, expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising job contributions; recommending compensation actions; adhering to policies and procedures
  • Obtain revenue by processing invoices, resolving missed payments, updating financial records, and effectively supervising staff engaged in similar activities
  • Keep records of invoices, deposits, and all correspondence regarding payment collection.
  • Ensure thorough understanding and application of ASC 606, Revenue from Contracts with Customers, focusing on accurate interpretation and reporting of contribution revenue in alignment with the unique accounting requirements of the non-profit sector. This includes staying abreast of changes and updates to the standard, and effectively communicating its impact on our organization's financial practices and reporting obligations.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance the efficiency and cadence of grant reimbursements, with an aim to minimize processing times and optimize cash flow. This role involves closely monitoring grant cycles and reimbursement schedules to accelerate fund availability, thereby maximizing interest income potential and supporting the financial sustainability of the organization.

Major Responsibilities

  • Management:
    • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the Accounts Receivable and Grants Management department
    • Maintain financial security by adhering to internal accounting controls; create, implement and maintain policies, procedures and controls
    • Maintain accounting ledgers by posting monthly account transactions
    • Protect the organization's value by keeping information confidential
    • Oversee the timely and accurate invoicing and collections. Maintain and streamline billing and collections process and cash application functions for the organization
    • Prepare monthly feedback reports on payment collections
    • Ensure successful accounts receivable efforts are accomplished and collect all monies owed to the company
    • Coordinates with other departments within F&A
    • Analyze and report on accounts receivable aging and collection performance and presents to F&A leadership as requested
    • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures, as well as local, state and federal regulations related to accounts receivable
    • Identify areas for process improvement and implement changes to increase efficiency and accuracy
    • Work with Grants Monitoring Committee and other stakeholders across KIPP DC on reporting cadence and requirements on an ongoing basis
    • Develop and track metrics related to grants, including on effectiveness of grant spending towards program goals as appropriate
  • Leadership:
    • Supervise, train, manage, and mentor accounts receivable and other revenue staff. Work closely with staff to prioritize work and ensure work is accurate and is being processed in a timely manner and in accordance with department policies and procedures
    • Monitor the work performance for compliance with company and department policies 
    • Allocate financial resources
    • Verify accounts receivable data
    • Make financial forecasts and predictions
    • Ensure proper training of new staff as it relates to essential job functions
    • Complete the Performance Management Process for assigned staff in a timely manner
    • Promote positive relationships, participative approaches and generate synergy
    • Keep up to date with the industry best practices
    • Manage and motivate the team to achieve departmental goals and objectives
    • Keep abreast of current trends and practices in the field of expertise
    • Miscellaneous duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned by management
    • Assist staff in researching and handling more complicated transactions and problems
    • Support KIPP DC strategic planning and budget planning processes. Leading annual lookback on grants portfolio, identifying wins, learnings, and changes to inform annual goal setting and contribution to overall KIPP DC strategic planning
    • Work with Managing Director of Finance to develop and manage grants portion of budget and actual revenue and expenses

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Experience with financial, accounting, and bookkeeping software, spreadsheets, forecasting
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with accuracy and attention to detail 
  • Stellar experience with budgeting
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to resolve misunderstandings and errors in a diplomatic manner
  • Great organizational skills with the ability to multitask
  • Strong financial accounting, quantitative skills, and understanding of financial concepts and business principles
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and integrity
  • Proven work as a Director of Revenue or similar role
  • Sound understanding or experience in Grants Management

Education, Experience, & Licensing Requirements:

  • Bachelors in accounting, finance, or business management required
  • Required minimum 5 years of proven experience working in an accounting, billing, grants management, or accounts receivable department
  • Required minimum 3 years in previous leadership role coaching, managing, with great interpersonal skills and an ability to take initiative, receive feedback, and seek out creative ideas
  • Experience managing in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, and highly complex environment, nonprofit organization along with an outstanding ability to multi-task, prioritize, manage, and execute projects at a high level with minimal supervision
  • Strong understanding of (GAAP) Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Strong understanding of Grants Management Revenue Cycle
  • Strong understanding of Accounts Receivable Revenue Cycle
  • Strong time management skills and a detail and results-oriented team player with the ability to work cross functionally with other departments
 

Compensation and Benefits

KIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package:

  • The anticipated starting salary for this position is $112,042-$138,403. At KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. When determining salaries we look at benchmarks in the education and non-profit sector.
  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
  • As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. This position will generally work independently and not regularly interface with students, families, or school teams. This position will primarily work from our headquarters office to maintain a connection to their colleagues and foster a sense of cross-functional collaboration. Because of the nature of this position’s work, this will allow for hybrid work. This role will have approximately 50% flexibility to work remotely.
