Job Summary
The Superintendent will be the leader of our academic strategy and will oversee the large multi-layered teams responsible for ensuring that our schools are excellent places for our students to learn and grow. The starting salary range for this role is $198,489-$245,192. This is a fully in-person role based at our headquarters office with an anticipated start date of September 3, 2024.

About the Team
The Superintendent will be a crucial member of KIPP DC's Executive Team and will lead KIPP DC's Instructional Leadership Team. The Executive Team is a powerhouse of experienced and talented leaders who lead all functional areas across KIPP DC and set the vision and priorities for the organization. The Instructional Leadership Team, which includes both the Chief Academic Officer and Chief of Schools and their respective teams or senior regional academic leaders and school leader managers, is responsible for setting and executing on the academic vision and strategy across KIPP DC's 22 schools.
About the Role
As the senior-most academic leader on the Executive Team and the leader of the Instructional Leadership Team, KIPP DC's Superintendent is responsible for ensuring our schools are joyful and welcoming environments leading to academic outcomes for our students and that our school system is collectively working towards these goals each and every day.
Position Type and Reporting
This is a non-exempt position and will report to the Chief Executive Officer.
Location and Type of Work
As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support which requires this position to be fully on-site. This role is currently required to be on-site or in schools during regular work hours.
Responsibilities
  • Academic Vision and Strategy (35%)
    • Set the regional academic vision, priorities, strategy, goals and execution plan
    • Progress monitor to ensure academic outcomes and be accountable for students across 22 schools
  • Collaboration, Communication and External Relations (35%)
    • Serve as the senior-most academic representative on the executive team and ensure collaboration, cohesion and relational trust across various functions of the organization including advancement, community engagement, equity & inclusion, finance, legal, operations and talent
    • Serve as the primary liaison to the board of directors' School & Community Affairs committee to share the vision for and progress in academic achievement in schools
    • Engage with KIPP Foundation to ensure alignment with national priorities and expectations and serve as point of contact for KIPP Foundation academic initiatives
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for academic achievement and school accountability including for external stakeholders such as the DC Public Charter School Board and DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education.
  • Instructional Leadership Team Leadership (30%)
    • Directly manage the Chief Academic Officer and Chief of Schools to meet outcomes and develop their respective teams
    • Ensure collaboration across the Academics team, focused on curriculum, coaching and structures to meet student needs, and the Schools team, focused on the daily experience and teaching and learning in schools.
    • Ensure ongoing development of team members to ensure a pipeline of talent on the Instructional Leadership Team

Requirements & Preferences:
Required Qualifications (3-5):
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 10 years of school leadership and/or school system management in a system with 10 schools
  • 15 years experience in urban schools
  • Experience managing large multi-layer teams into schools
  • Deep knowledge of and commitment to equity to drive student outcomes
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand frequently
  • Ability to travel across KIPP DC schools
  • Prolonged periods of sedentary work
  • Flexibility to work outside normal business hours or weekends for KIPP DC events

Benefits & Compensation
KIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package:
  • The anticipated starting salary range for this position is $198,489-$245,192. At KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. When determining salaries we look at benchmarks in the education and non-profit sector.
  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
