Description

Kirtland Community College is excited to announce that we are searching for our next Director of Athletics and Student-Athlete Development.
The Director of Athletics and Student-Athlete Development is responsible for the development, management, coordination and supervision of Kirtland's competitive intercollegiate athletic program. The Director provides visionary leadership, strategic planning and policy development for the athletics program; provides ongoing recruitment and development of coaches and student-athletes through coordination, planning, and evaluation; works with other departments at Kirtland Community College to maintain an athletic program that is committed to Kirtland's mission and strategic priorities; administers the overall athletic budget; ensures compliance with all college, national association and conference policies, rules and regulations; fosters high standards of integrity, athletic excellence, and academic success; remains highly visible to students, coaches, administrators, and community members, and is able to develop excellent relationships with both internal and external individuals.
Duties
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*
Management and Supervision
  • Ensures the well-being of student athletes and coaching staff by demonstrating academic excellence, commitment to Kirtland's overall mission, and commitment to the welfare of student athletes and to compliance with the rules.
  • Ensures transparency in operations, respect for individuals, maintaining and promoting strong moral character, and fostering a competitive growth for all student-athletes representing Kirtland Community College.
  • Demonstrate strong management and fiscal skills by constructing, managing, analyzing, and monitoring multiple budgets to ensure the department is fiscally responsible. Manage all facets of Kirtland's athletic program, including scheduling, promoting programs and events, facilitating operations, fundraising, coordinating athletic contests, team practices, and oversees Transportation arrangements for the athletic teams.
  • Maintain athletic Policy and Procedures Handbook, Coaches Handbook and Student-Athlete Handbook and communicates such with Coaches and students Actively work to align the mission, vision and goals of the intercollegiate athletic program with those of the College by acting as a liaison with recruiters, leagues, teams, players, and directors
  • Develop processes and procedures to ensure accuracy of reporting and collecting data including, student success reports, weekly game eligibility reports, Equity in Athletics Reports, retention reports, and other grade information reporting.
  • Develop and maintain a successful athletic program while adapting to day-to-day challenges with focus, flexibility, and passion.
  • Assists coaches in their efforts to recruit student athletes within the colleges services in an effort to fill team rosters, and to provide academic and fiscal support needed to ensure athletes complete their programs of study.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.
Rules and Regulations
  • Works closely with the college's coaching staff, the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA), college administration, and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) to ensure the Kirtland Community College Athletic Program, its staff, and student athletes conform with all league standards and requirements and college policy.
  • Represent the College at relevant NJCAA, MCCAA meetings and events.
  • Compiles information and statistics for the Title IX Report on athletic program support and participation rate, and ensures that this and other required reports are made and distributed in a timely manner.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled compliance seminars and ensure compliance with NJCAA regulations.
  • Implement and disseminate pertinent information on MCCAA and NJCAA on athletics rules and relations, including compliance with Title IX regulations.
Marketing and Fundraising
  • Serve as a strategist and collaborator with Kirtland Community College Foundations Office to maximize opportunities and coordinate efforts to raise funds to support athletic programs. This is to include the development of team-specific fundraising events, hosting of events and off-season camps.
  • Lead and coordinate all fundraising activities for the athletic department.
  • Actively promotes all Kirtland athletic programs and oversees the development and implementation of a sound athletic marketing plan, coordinated through Kirtland Community College Marketing Department.
  • Serve as the primary media contact for all sports, and handles media relations duties (requests, interviews, in coordination with Marketing).
Student Success and Development
  • Collaborate with Academic Advising, Career Development, Teaching and Learning and WRIT center to develop an academic plan of success for student athletes.
  • Oversee the Athletic Academic Success Plan by serving as implementation coordinator to ensure student growth and success in and out of the classroom.
  • Inform and advise student athletes and staff on College, MCCAA and NJCAA rules on academic integrity, sportsmanship and educational opportunities.
  • Is involved in decisions regarding eligibility and discipline using college, NJCAA, and MCCAA guidelines and ensures that rules, regulations, and policies are adhered to.
  • Encourage academic excellence in student athletes while maintaining accurate records in the certification of eligibility process.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated experience in managing successful programs staff in areas of philanthropic communications, stewardship, and special events.
  • Three to five years of progressively more responsible experience in the administration of an athletic program, or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position. Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Demonstrated experience and appropriate training/certification working with student-athlete populations and sensitivity to and understanding of the diversity of the student population.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Federal Title IX regulations, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, and the standards and requirements of the MCCAA and the NJCAA
  • Demonstrated applied and empirical knowledge of sports performance program design and implementation for college athletic programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both on-campus and off-campus constituents.
  • Strong administration skills allowing for understanding of college athletics, time management, multitasking to balance daily tasks.
  • Strong leadership, communication, empathy, compassion and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to interpret, comprehend, and apply complex federal, state, association, and college laws, rules, and requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a public setting and at a personal level.
  • A commitment to the goals, standards, and ethics of Kirtland Community College, and the ability to effectively communicate and obtain adherence to these concepts.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver's License.
SUPERVISION - Works under the general supervision of the College President.
ATTENDANCE - Individuals in this position are expected to be present and available as appropriate to engage and meet with coaches and college staff, prepare and file reports, attend meetings, and communicate with the MCCAA and NJCAA. Expected attendance at athletic events, which may occur on evenings and weekends.
WORKING CONDITIONS - Conditions are generally those of a typical office environment, requiring frequent oral and online communication with coaches, staff, other Athletic Directors, and association officials, and the ability to enter data and written communications in electronic format in a timely manner. The position requires periodic travel, which may occasionally be under late night and poor weather conditions.
