Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Project Accountant with a strong background in the construction industry to manage project financials, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and profitability. The ideal candidate has experience with percentage-of-completion (PoC) accounting and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, playing a critical role in financial forecasting and cost management. This position will partner with project managers, superintendents, and senior leadership to optimize financial performance across multiple construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
Project Accounting & Financial Management
- Oversee percentage-of-completion (PoC) accounting, ensuring revenue recognition aligns with project progress and contractual terms.
- Prepare and analyze work-in-progress (WIP) reports, tracking financial performance, underbilling, and overbilling.
- Reconcile job cost reports and ensure accuracy in project budgets, change orders, and forecasts.
- Monitor project financial health, identifying risks, cost overruns, and margin fluctuations.
- Assist with monthly financial close processes, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations for construction projects.
Billing, Contracts & Compliance
- Review and process progress billings, ensuring alignment with contract terms and project milestones.
- Collaborate with project managers to verify subcontractor pay applications, lien waivers, and compliance documents.
- Ensure adherence to GAAP, FAR, and industry-specific financial reporting standards.
- Support external audits and assist in preparing financial documents for compliance purposes.
Collaboration & Reporting
- Work closely with project managers and finance leadership to forecast cash flow needs and budget variances.
- Provide detailed financial reports, including job cost tracking, profitability analysis, and variance explanations.
- Assist in developing and maintaining internal controls to safeguard financial integrity in project accounting.
- Utilize ERP and accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, Procore, or similar) to manage financial data efficiently.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred but not required).
- 3 years of experience in construction accounting, with a focus on PoC accounting and WIP reporting.
- Strong knowledge of AIA billing, cost-plus contracts, T&M, and lump sum contracts.
- Proficiency in construction accounting software (Sage 300, Viewpoint, Procore, QuickBooks, or similar).
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and financial modeling.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments.
