The Role:
Associate Director, R&D Technology Innovation identifies, understands, and articulates innovative and novel technology trends within and outside life sciences that can be applied to solve or improve R&D processes with a focus on R&D research, acceleration of clinical trials, and product development. This role exercises imagination to challenge the current state and collaborate with R&D IS Business Partners (BPs) and R&D business stakeholders to identify meaningful use cases to pilot new technologies. In addition, this role identifies and establishes effective relationships with external partners to augment knowledge and resources (design, adaptation, implementation, support) for R&D technology innovation initiatives.
Essential Functions
Develop & Support R&D Technology Innovation Vision - Lead a small team of R&D technology innovation leads, and in close partnership with R&D business stakeholders in respective roles, and R&D IS BPs, identify, understand, and articulate innovative and novel technology trends that can be applied to establish or improve R&D processes with a focus on R&D research and early development, acceleration of clinical trials, and other critical segments of the end-to-end medicinal product development journey. Promote and explain potential use and implementation of such innovative technology ideas to R&D and IS stakeholders and decision makers.
Connect R&D Technology Innovation Vision to Reality - Collaborate with R&D IS BPs and R&D business stakeholders to identify meaningful use cases with significant ROI potential for R&D to pilot new technologies. Represent, lead, assign and manage new technology evaluation and experimentation ideas during ideation, pilot or proof of concept projects, and when applicable, partner with IS SMEs and BPs to initiate solution design and implementation. Manage positive fails, fail fast, and learn from such innovation experimentation failures. With innovation consider sustainability of the solutions within the company operations and scalability to meet demand.
Requirements
Experienced IT professional leading or managing evaluations and implementations of technology solutions including, cloud or digital technology capabilities, in support of R&D functions and processes in pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical device industry or life sciences industry.
Working experience of challenging the current state, enabling ideation and bringing unique diverse perspectives to solving hard problems.
Domain knowledge of the medicinal drug development lifecycle in one or more business areas of pharma R&D is a strong plus.
An intellectual curiosity for emerging technologies and market trends, combined with a vigor to drive the research, experimentation and adoption of new technologies is a strong plus.
Ability to understand a variety of disruptive technology products, services, and platforms that will help build the R&D journey from 'Test and learns' to 'Digital Platforms'.
Ability to translate business problems to creative technology solutions and think “outside-of-the-box”.
Conceptual and analytical thinker, able to understand, analyze, and synthesize complex business and technology issues and strategies.
Vendor management experience including vendor evaluation / selection, due diligence, contracting, and performance management.
Proven leadership skills with the ability to lead, develop, and motivate a team.
Team player able to work effectively with others across global teams.
Ability to build strong working relationships across all levels throughout an organization.
Highly developed interpersonal, oral and written communications, presentation, negotiation, facilitation, and leadership skills with a commitment to internal/external customer responsiveness.
Flexible and adaptable process-oriented work style; strong demonstrated work ethic that emphasizes customer focus, quality, and continuous improvement.
Highly effective presentation skills enabling the business functions and senior management to clearly understand how new or innovative technology solutions will deliver expected benefits and provide competitive advantage.
Well organized with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple concurrent projects (often with changing timelines and dependencies) in a matrix team environment.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science degree in a science or science-related field is required. Five plus years of experience in the pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical device industry, or life sciences industry is required.
