SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
The Bus Driver plays a pivotal role in ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of the children, staff, and volunteers during transportation to and from school, as well as on field trips and activities. With confidence and expertise, the Bus Driver maintains the bus in pristine condition and follows the safest and most efficient routes. Furthermore, they ensure that all children are secured in age-appropriate child safety restraints and are prepared to evacuate children in case of an emergency. This position offers the opportunity for long-term employment that may extend into the school year.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
· Ensuring the safety and well-being of children and adults during transportation to and from school, field trips, and athletic activities.
· Completes a required comprehensive bus inspection (pre and post-trip inspection) daily, reporting any conditions of concern to the Supervisor or delegated staff person before transporting children.
· Prepares trip reports consisting of mileage and gas receipts.
· Ensures that the communication device is in proper working order before each trip. Ensuring that the communication device is not being used while the vehicle is in movement.
· Ensures that the bus always has sufficient fuel.
· In consultation with the Supervisor, develop and follow efficient and safe written bus routes that ensure no child will be on the bus for more than one hour.
· Operates buses in such a way that road and safety regulations are always followed; reports any traffic violations to the Supervisor immediately.
· Follows safe bus loading and unloading procedures.
· At the end of a route, before leaving, the bus driver will walk through the bus and check each seat.
· Prepares children for bus drills and ensures bus evacuation drills are held at least monthly. And documents all drills in writing.
· Assists in other transportation training of teachers, children and volunteers.
· In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuate children according to written and practiced procedures.
· In the event of an accident, ensure that medical emergency procedures are followed; complete a written accident report as required by the delegate’s procedure and other authorities.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
PREFERRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Have a valid Wisconsin CDL driver’s license and continuously maintain and satisfy all requirements for Class B, C, and D licenses and S and P endorsements.
· Pass a Federal Drug and Alcohol mandated testing program.
· Ability to pass an annual Wisconsin School Bus Driver’s physical, which includes a tuberculosis test and drug test.
· Must be able to comply with background checks, including fingerprints, as required by the agency and/or Wisconsin Licensing Agency.
· Ability to learn and comprehend information from Procedures Manuals and other materials.
· Must be able to travel, enter, and exit a vehicle without assistance and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions.
· Effective oral and written communication skills
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
· High School Diploma minimum
· Experience as a School Bus Driver preferred.
· Certification in First Aide & CPR preferred.
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with S and P endorsement required
