Supervisor: Medical Interpreter Manager

Status: Non-exempt/Hourly position

Hours of Work: Full-time (32-40 hrs/wk)

Synopsis: The Medical Interpreter supports the operations of the Language Access Department and serves as a conduit for patients and providers in the consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation mode.

Qualifications:

  • Fluent in English and Spanish , both oral and written, with a minimum of Advanced Mid proficiency level according to ACTF (http://www.actfl.org/files/public/Guidelinesspeak.pdf), required;
  • Have proof of medical interpreter training (a minimum of 40 hours and/or national certification), required;
  • Able to accurately work in consecutive mode and sight translate into and from working language(s), required;
  • Have 3-5 years of experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter with strong medical vocabulary (including vocabulary of medical specialties), strongly preferred;
  • Familiar with and able to work with diverse populations with different cultural/socio-economic backgrounds, strongly preferred;
  • Understand local health system of service delivery, preferred;
  • Knowledge of computer systems and smart phones, required;
  • Knowledge of EHR (previously EMR), strongly preferred;
  • Flexible and able to adjust to last minute schedule changes, required;
  • Have good interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills, required;
  • Able to rotate schedule, including working evenings and Saturdays, required; and
  • Able to travel to different sites, required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Relays medical information between speakers of two different languages in compliance with NCIHC Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice;
  • Provides sight translation and written translations as required in patient encounters (e.g. filling out forms, medical instructions, and medication schedules);
  • Complies with all clinic policies and procedures, particularly relating to patient confidentiality and informed consent, passing performance of competencies required of professional medical interpreters;
  • Provides interpreting services in-person, by phone, or via video remote;
  • Explains clinic and hospital resources, office protocols, and limitations to clinicians and patients; makes appropriate referrals; serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers to contribute to successful outcomes;
  • Supports office operations by taking requests, calling patients to confirm appointments, documenting encounters, verifying and scheduling appointments, doing general troubleshooting, filing, and photocopying as necessary;
  • Communicates effectively with office staff via, phone, text, or email;
  • Utilizes online computer systems such as PROPIO, EMH, and other technologies as needed;
  • Performs duties in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation;
  • Adheres to on-site and off-site policies on customer relations and hospitality;
  • Attends monthly staff meetings and trainings as required;
  • Assists with departmental on-the-job training and mentoring of interpreter internships;
  • Works with special projects as assigned.

Performance Evaluation:

To be performed at the end of the 90-day probationary period, at the completions of the 1st 12 months of employment and annually thereafter.
