The Development Specialist works in partnership with the Development Manager and other La Clinica leaders to help La Clinica meet its mission and vision. They do so by identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding institutional giving partners to maximize giving to La Clinica. Institutional donors include private foundations, including donor advised funds; corporate foundations; public trusts; municipal, state, and federal donors; bilateral aid agencies, etc. that systemically give grants.
Duties and goals will be assigned in the annual development plan and reflected in the Goal Setting and Performance Review process. While the intention is to create focus, clarity and specific role outcomes, other duties may be assigned dependent on the needs of the organization.
Accountabilities IncludePerforms Essential Job Duties
  • Identify new institutional giving partners through networking and structured research.
  • Narrow the identification of “institutional giving partners” to those with, 1.) Close interest and alignment with La Clinica’s mission, vision, and purpose, and 2.) The intent and capacity to grant awards.
  • Cultivate institutional giving partners in coordination with the Development Manager and other leaders, as needed.
  • Understand the mechanisms used by the institutional partner to guide giving, including their current and future capacity.
  • Who makes the funding decisions?
  • What is the program or project that best aligns with institutional giving partner interests?
  • How do they process requests?
  • What are the relevant timelines?
  • Solicit institutional giving partner support.
  • Use understanding of the institutional giving partner’s giving process to create and submit high quality proposals on time. Identify the specific ‘ask’ level in coordination with the Development Manager and other La Clinica leaders.
  • Work with the finance department to create budgets, using approved budget template, when possible and ensure that the project’s budget meets the funders requirements, adequately supports the proposal, and is aligned with the organization’s financial strategy.
  • Engage leaders through proposal creation process to reach agreements on grant writing deliverables and timelines, and actively communicate this plan with team members throughout the grant solicitation process. Ensure accountabilities for deadlines are known and reported.
  • Arrange for leaders and other content experts to present the proposal to the institutional giving partner, as needed.
  • Follow up on the request, address questions as needed, and report the outcome to the Development Manager. Complete weekly progress report and submit it on time.
  • Steward and follow through on grant awards.
  • Ensure alignment with the Gratitude Program’s protocol and frequency of communication.
  • Engage project implementation process to ensure that team members responsible for the implementation of the grant funded project are informed about the expectations and deliverables.
  • Remain engaged with implementation teams until project is complete and oversee the submission of all reports on deliverables and outcomes.
  • Learn about areas of emerging interest and partnership in the relationship.
  • Reinforce the importance of institutional giving partner’s contributions through informal and formal means.
  • Remain a resource to leaders and team members to answer questions about the grant, funder intention, use of funds, reporting, and future opportunities.
Gift Management
  • Complete all required documentation in Blackbaud systems according to program procedures.
  • Update SharePoint development portal with gift proposals, staffing plan, evaluation plan, and reporting templates and schedule.
  • Update La Clinica’s Contributed Income Tracking system in coordination with the finance department.
General Duties
  • Communicate information with team members to ensure coordination across areas of focus.
  • Complete assigned training via La Clinica’s learning module system (Relias) by required due date.
  • Assist development team members to maximize giving from other areas of focus, as needed.
  • Assist and participate in all Development events.
Fundraising Ethics
  • Obey all laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Protect donor privacy and confidentiality.
  • Ensure that donor gift restrictions are honored.
  • Follow all gift acceptance policies and procedures.
  • Protect that donors do not have inappropriate influence over programs and activities or receive inappropriate benefits from La Clinica in exchange for their donations.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with donors.
Customer ServiceDevelops and maintains professional, support-oriented working relationships with patients, employees, team members, and community partners. Demonstrates continuous improvement in achieving “developing” and “fully competent” levels of La Clinica’s Behavioral Standards.
