The Circulating Nurse has a critical role in delivering safe and efficient care to patients throughout surgical procedures. Circulating Nurses collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesia personnel, product vendors, and other healthcare professionals to achieve successful surgical outcomes. They must have exceptional clinical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform well in high-pressure situations.

Typical Schedule:

Monday thru Friday with flexed start times ranging from 0600 to 0830. Mandatory weekday/weekend/holiday call obligation of one day per week, every 6th weekend. The holiday obligation is also covered by call shifts.

Qualifications

• Current WI. Registered Nursing License, required, BSN, preferred.
• 1 year of Med/Surg or equivocal unit experience, required.
• 1-2 years of Operating Room experience, preferred. PeriOperative101 required for applicants with no experience.
• BLS, ACLS, and PALS, required.
• CNOR, preferred.

Responsibilities Include:

• Performing the perioperative nursing role to include preoperative assessment of the patient, nursing care plan formulation, operative care plan implementation, and postoperative evaluation of the patient’s response/outcome. Also evaluates the effectiveness and appropriateness of nursing care provided with documentation of such.
• Understanding and utilization of principles of asepsis in all duties.
• Assisting in the setting up and performance of cases by opening of sterile packs, instruments, and supplies according to sterile technique.
• Assisting in the setting up the procedure/operating room by gathering of equipment and supplies needed for each procedure.
• Preparing each patient for surgery by:
  1. positioning the patient in the appropriate position
  2. preparing the patient’s operative site
  3. confirming the procedure and site according to the surgical consent
  4. helping move the patient to and from the operating table.
• Assisting anesthesia personnel with the intubation/extubation of patients, the monitoring of fluid volume balance, the administration of blood/blood products, and the thermo-regulation of the patient.
• Performing surgical counts (sponges, sharps, and instruments) and documents nursing care in the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Handling specimens according to proper procedure.
• Assisting in the clean-up of the operating room following surgery, including proper disposal of used supplies and sharps.
• Assuming responsibility for intra-operative patient safety related to positioning activities, the use of equipment, and the use of chemicals and solutions.
