Job Summary

The Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), part of the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS), seeks a highly qualified Veterinary Medical Officer to provide veterinary services and consultative support for the BARC research animal program. 

Job Title: Veterinary Medical Officer

Location: Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, MD 

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medical Degree (VMD) from an AVMA-accredited institution or equivalent certification.

  • Current Maryland state veterinary license.
  • APHIS accreditation in the state of Maryland within 180 days of contract start and maintenance of accreditation.
  • Valid DEA license for the administration of controlled substances.
  • Preferably Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DACLAM) certified.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide routine and emergency veterinary services for a variety of agricultural and traditional laboratory animal species, including cattle, small ruminants, swine, poultry, and rodents.

  • Conduct scheduled on-site rounds five days a week to assess animal health and provide necessary care or treatment.
  • Perform diagnostic sampling, testing, prognostic assessments, and surgical procedures (both routine and emergency) with specified success rates.
  • Maintain complete and accurate health records for all animals, documenting examination findings, treatments administered, and prognostic assessments.
