Full Job Description

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE I

DEFINITION

Under direct supervision, plans and conducts a variety of professional practices promoting and protecting the health of populations; provides nursing services, health education, and health consulting services, including the prevention and control of diseases and the promotion of health awareness; performs data collection and analysis; program planning; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry and first working level classification in the Public Health Nurse series. Incumbents must have requisite public health nursing certifications but have limited public health nursing work experience. As experience is gained, incumbents learn to perform the full scope of public health nursing duties. This class is distinguished from Public Health Nurse II in that the latter is expected to perform a larger scope of public health nursing duties and activities on a more independent basis. Positions in the Public Health Nurse series are flexibly staffed. Incumbents may advance to higher classifications after gaining the knowledge, skill, experience, licenses, and certifications which meet the qualifications for and demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direct supervision from assigned supervisory or management staff. Exercises no supervision over staff. May provide technical and functional direction to assigned staff.

Incumbents generally work partially in an office environment with moderate noise levels and controlled temperature conditions and partially in the field. Light Work: Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

This class is distinguished from Public Health Nurse, Senior in that the latter has greater program coordination responsibilities, as well as serving as lead workers.
