    Teacher – English for Speakers of Other Languages

    Purpose Statement

    The job of Teacher - English for Speakers of Other Languages is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing quality language instruction and services to students whose first language is not English; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; administering screening and yearly language assessments; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.
    This job reports to Building Principal

    Essential Functions

    • Adapts classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
    • Administers screenings and yearly language assessments for the purpose of evaluating students' language ability.
    • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress and available programs for the purpose of communicating expectations and students achievements; develops methods for improvement and/or reinforces classroom goals in the home environment.
    • Assesses student progress toward objectives, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration, to inform planning/identify student needs, and monitor progress.
    • Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes and achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
    • Demonstrates methods required to facilitate classroom and/or subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program of English for speakers of other languages.
    • Directs student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students which includes lesson plans.
    • Engages linguistically and culturally divers learners in the fabric of the school and community while utilizing other culture for the purpose of promoting cross cultural understanding.
    • Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
    • Models English communication for the purpose of developing student ability to communicate effectively in the English language.
    • Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. building staff, department, BIT, IEP, professional development, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
    • Performs site visits at multiple work sites including home visits for the purpose of providing the English for speakers of other languages program to students and assisting as necessary to maintain a quality program.
    • Prepares and maintains a variety of written materials (e.g. monitoring plans, parent notification, assessment results, annual updates, exit records, anecdotal records, screenings, student progress reports, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated District, State, and Federal requirements.
    • Provides language instruction, assessment, planning and support to English for speakers of other languages students for the purpose of improving their success in academics and socialization skills.
    • Provides coaching and support concerning English for speakers of other language students to home school, teacher, administrators, and parents for the purpose of improving performance, health status, problem solving techniques and a variety of personal issues.
    • Researches current trends and Best Practices in language instruction and multicultural education for the purpose of developing and providing a quality program of English for speakers of other languages.
    • Responds to inquires from a variety of sources (e.g. other teachers, parents, administrators, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction.
    • Supports classroom teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.
    • Utilizes varied, appropriate, and thought provoking instructional resources including media and/or technology for the purpose of increasing student understanding and achievement.

    Other Functions

    Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
