Deputy Director

Summary of Position

A rare opportunity has opened for a leader who is passionate about driving measurable and lasting change in the nation’s nonprofit leadership structure. Latinos for Leadership Excellence And Diversity (Latinos LEAD) was founded in 2017, and has demonstrated the impact of its theory of change by placing more than two dozen Latinas and Latinos on nonprofit boards since 2022. Latinos LEAD is ideally positioned to expand and extend its proven nonprofit governance diversity programs to major cities in the western United States. 

Inquiries, nominations, and applications are welcomed from seasoned management, human resource, education and other generalists to accept the challenge of sustaining and expanding our core purpose: Place talented Latinos on the boards of thriving nonprofit organizations. 

The newly created position is a crucial component of Latinos LEAD’s succession plan for the organization’s founder and executive director, and should be prepared to ascend to the Executive Director position within 12-18 months of starting. The successful candidate will be passionately motivated to advance authentic ethnic diversity in the nonprofit sector; a positive and enthusiastic self-disciplined professional who can demonstrate strong administrative skills, resourceful program management, and a collegial and collaborative manner. 

Latinos LEAD has created a niche market in nonprofit consulting. The Deputy Director should thrive in an entrepreneurial environment that is exciting, motivating, and challenging. This is a leadership role for a fearless and determined executive.

There is no ideal set of qualifications and credentials, applicants and nominees should present a strong track record of progressively greater responsibilities in the private or nonprofit sectors, marketing/sales/business development accomplishments, and must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills (this is a firm requirement). Strong candidates may have experience in a wide variety of professional fields. A bachelor of arts in business, marketing, communications, or related major is required; a graduate degree or equivalent in business management, organization development, or nonprofit management is preferred.

Administration, Program Management, and External Relations

  • Support the development and execution of operating goals to advance the core strategic priorities of the board of directors.
  • Carry out routine and continually evolving administrative and programming operations of an innovative and growing nonprofit organization, including basic bookkeeping, human resources, data management, social media website and information technology, grants administration, contract administration, and regulatory and tax compliance.
  • Support the board in carrying out its legal and financial oversight duties.
  • Carry out contracts to recruit Latino professionals for service on nonprofit boards. This function will constitute up to 40% of the role. 
  • Engage and work closely with senior nonprofit executives; listening carefully to partners to prepare public and internal board recruiting materials that accurately reflect the client’s priorities, plans, and desired candidate competencies.
  • Bring optimism, persistence, patience, diplomacy, timing, and insight to business development; strive to add value for partners through a collaborative and discreet senior consulting model.
  • Recruit, supervise, and evaluate staff and vendors to support executive recruiting, data management, accounting, website admin, and other operations.
  • Represent Latinos LEAD at exhibits, workshops, seminars and speaking engagements at conferences and conventions hosted by nonprofit industry associations, Latino professional member associations, leadership development, and Latino community development.
  • Remain abreast of trends, findings, innovations, and professional development opportunities in the fields of executive recruiting, nonprofit senior consulting, nonprofit management, Latino community development, and leadership development.

Organization Growth & Development

  • Collaborate with the board, staff, and consultants to carry out the full range of the organization’s expanding administrative and
  • Support the Executive Director in promoting the organization’s programs through online and direct communications, marketing, and outreach.
  • Continually consult research, benchmarks, and other relevant market and practice findings to identify and implement promising practices.
  • Mentoring, coaching; be an accessible, approachable, and sensitive confidant for nonprofit leaders who desire to see more diverse governance teams, particularly those overcoming internal and social concerns about the value of diverse management teams.

Qualifications

  • At least seven years in a senior management position at a nonprofit organization, foundation, private corporation, or government agency. Understanding the nonprofit model, board practices, and the chief executive/board relationship is an absolute must.
  • Strong academic credentials. While candidates with advanced degrees in public administration, business, organization development are desired, Latinos LEAD recognizes that excellent applicants may bring non-traditional assets in these areas. 
  • Passionate about the Latinos LEAD mission and program impact.
  • Relate and collaborate with clients, board, staff, and consultants in a tactful, transparent, direct, and substantive manner
  • Superlative business and proposal writing skills are required.

Salary & Benefits

The salary includes an annual base of $85,000 and will be supplemented up to $145,000 for carrying out executive recruiting contracts. A history of this compensation paid by Latinos LEAD and the industry-standard compensation formula will be shared with finalists. Health insurance and other benefits will be provided as individual circumstances dictate.
