POSITION SUMMARY

A Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant substitute's role is to assist in the assessment, development and implementation of occupational
therapy programs for students on assigned caseload.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in assessing students' level of functioning and need for therapy.
  • Assists in developing an Individual Education Program for each student and participant in IEP meetings with parents at the direction of the occupational therapist.
  • Implements therapy programs to meet IEP goals.
  • Teaches parents, teachers or aides and other appropriate personnel to implement fine motor programs as prescribed by the occupational therapist.
  • Collects and records data on therapy programs.
  • Monitors therapy programs using observations, data and/or pre-post testing.
  • Manages student behavior during therapy.
  • Works cooperatively and communicates appropriately with teaching and support staff.
  • Develops and adheres to a daily schedule.
  • Works with the occupational therapist to order appropriate materials and equipment; uses and maintains that equipment.
  • Monitors and reports student performance and progress.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as directed.
  • Completes required reports, IEP's and other forms promptly and in an acceptable manner.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the supervisor and/or director.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Must possess a current occupational therapy assistant license/certification
  • Some experience working with children is helpful.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • CPR/First Aid Certified preferred.
  • Ability to work as part of the educational team while supporting the individual needs of the student as identified on the student’s Individual Education Program (IEP).
  • Strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
