Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is Hiring a Construction Health & Safety Professional Near Berkeley, CA

The Berkeley Lab's Environment, Health, & Safety Division is hiring a Construction Health & Safety Professional. Reporting to the Health and Safety Operations Support Team Manager, this role provides technical support to address complex construction safety and EHS issues. The position requires broad knowledge in areas such as industrial hygiene, construction health and safety, subcontractor safety, scaffold safety, and ergonomics, offering professional safety expertise for construction projects and subcontractor work.

What You Will Do:

Construction Project Support

  • Acts as the EHS Scaffold and Mobile Elevated Work Platform Subject Matter Expert.
  • Identifies EHS areas needing supplemental support and engages SMEs or their management.
  • Resolves conflicts in EHS comments/recommendations for subcontractor Site Specific Safety Plans.
  • Maintains project tracking tools (e.g., Smartsheet, Bluebeam, Price Tool) throughout projects.
  • Collaborates with EHS SMEs and staff professionally and courteously.
  • Reviews subcontractor Site Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs) for safety compliance before work starts, consulting other SMEs as needed.
  • Partners with subcontractors to align them with LBNL's safety and industrial hygiene expectations.
  • Leads and mentors less experienced health and safety professionals and technicians.
  • May act as lead or technical advisor on projects of various sizes.
  • Develops and implements programs, policies, and procedures to monitor and prevent construction-related hazards.
  • Writes technical reports based on data interpretation, observations, and regulations.
  • Keeps updated on industrial health and safety regulations and participates in monitoring organizational health standards.
  • Makes recommendations and decisions affecting safety, cost, equipment use, and procedures, acting as a consultant for innovative solutions.
  • Acts as the EHS Procore Liaison for construction projects.
  • Leads select construction projects.
  • Participates in project reviews as assigned.
  • Manages and updates the PRICE Tool database and dashboards.

EHS Division Support

  • Ensures day-to-day work and activities are safely conducted within established work authorizations per PUB-3000, Chapter 1.
  • Provides accurate reports to standards and enters information into the IH CHESS database.
  • Acts as a prime consultant on medium to large projects impacting Berkeley Lab's long-term goals.
  • Represents Berkeley Lab in interactions with DOE, regulators, peers, clients, and management.
  • Contributes to DOE-required Performance Indicators.
  • Identifies and implements continuous improvement in program areas.
  • Oversees the SBN Inspection tool.
  • Administers the EHS document management system (PowerDMS).
  • Oversees all Quickbase database systems and tools.

What is Required:

  • BS/BA in Occupational Safety or Industrial Hygiene with 5-7 years of experience, MS/MA with 3-5 years of experience, Ph.D. with 1-3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Broad knowledge and experience in hazard detection and control in research environments.
  • Experience reviewing Master Specifications, IIPPs, Safety Plans, RFIs, submittals, and other construction documents.
  • Direct experience applying OSHA, DOE, ANSI, and other health and safety regulations in various work environments.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines and budgets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with facilities management, EHS staff, project managers, and subcontractors. Proven ability to build consensus.
  • Independent decision-making abilities and coordination with other EHS SMEs.
  • Insight for providing program direction and resolving conflicts through leadership.
  • Experience negotiating with regulatory organizations.
  • Proficiency with standard business software (word processing, presentations, spreadsheets).
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position, including lifting up to 25 lbs, frequent standing and walking, moving in confined spaces, climbing stairs, and inspecting equipment. Must use various personal protective equipment and work in various weather conditions, performing field activities about 75% of the time.
  • Proficient with standard business software (word processing, presentations, spreadsheets).
  • Ability to work independently with sound judgment on critical issues.
  • Experience working effectively with diverse job classifications and providing technical leadership and consultation.
  • Expertise in applying safety principles to solve complex problems and measure results.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines and budgets.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience handling sensitive issues and difficult people.
  • Knowledge and experience using Procore, Quickbase, and document management systems like PowerDMS.
  • Experience as an EHS professional on DOE O 413.3B projects.
  • Knowledge of DOE regulations, including 10 CFR 851.
  • Proficient with Google Looker Data Studio and other data management tools.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • The Construction Health & Safety Professional is expected to pay $129,000.00 - $150,000.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $114,252.00 - $192,804.00 for the H52.3 - Construction Safety Spec. 3 position. Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed remote.
