Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is Hiring a Physicist Research Scientist Near San Francisco, CA

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( LBNL ) Advanced Light Source ( ALS ) Division has an opening for a Physicist to manage day–to–day operations of Beamline 11.0.1.2, maintain and upgrade beamline equipment and associated infrastructure, and collaborate with the ALS user community to conduct state–of–the–art X–ray experiments. Responsibilities include practicing Integrated Safety Management, developing collaborations with new and existing ALS users, serving as an expert resource in scientific and technical areas, and documenting and communicating work through scientific publications and presentations.

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x–ray, hard x–ray, and infrared regimes attract over 1,600 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co–location of these user facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences, among others – offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x–ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large–scale upgrade (ALS–U) that will endow the facility with state–of–the–art x–ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our growing team!

What You Will Do:

  • Beamline Operations:
  • Oversee day–to–day operations of Beamline 11.0.1.2 (Resonant Soft X–ray Scattering) and other assigned ALS beamlines.
  • Maintain and upgrade beamline equipment and associated computing, network, data, and software infrastructure.
  • Support ALS users and meet emerging needs of the user community.
  • Safety Management:
  • Practice Integrated Safety Management (ISM) in all aspects of work.
  • Work under the controls, training, and authorizations of all Work Planning & Control (WP&C) activities to which you are assigned.
  • Collaborations and Networking:
  • Develop collaborations and partnerships with new and existing ALS users.
  • Build and maintain a professional network within the scientific community.
  • Expert Resource:
  • Serve as an expert resource in scientific and technical areas.
  • Participate in committees, working groups, and review or advisory committees.
  • Act as a reviewer for publications and organizer at conferences or workshops.
  • Documentation and Communication:
  • Document and communicate work through scientific publications and presentations.
  • Publish results in peer–reviewed scientific and technical journals.
  • Present findings at workshops and conferences.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent work experience in physics, chemistry, or material science.
  • Minimum 3 years of post–Ph.D. experience in soft X–ray spectroscopy/scattering, including instrumentation and scientific studies.
  • Experience with operating, maintaining, and developing scientific instrumentation and associated computing, network, data, and software.
  • Experience in synchrotron radiation and X–ray scattering experiments.
  • Experience with using software for scattering data processing, modeling and analysis.
  • Experience in materials research, particularly in soft matter and energy materials.
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent scientific communication skills (e.g., publications and/or presentations).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in methodology development for material science applications using synchrotron–based tools
  • Experience in leading large–scale collaboration involving scientists and engineers with different academic backgrounds.
  • Strong knowledge of X–ray matter interaction, familiarity with the theory of X–ray scattering and spectroscopy, and understanding of the coherence property of X–rays.
  • Experience adapting and developing scripts or software for x–ray scattering data collection, processing and analysis.
  • Experience with X–ray instrumentation, including vacuum systems and sample environments.
