Purpose Statement
The job of Maintenance - Grounds is done for the purpose/s of ensuring that the buildings, grounds, playgrounds and parking lots are maintained in a safe, attractive and healthful condition for students, staff and the public; and to resolve immediate operational and/or safety concerns.
Essential Functions
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Coordinates with other district personnel and outside vendors for the purpose of providing information necessary for making decisions regarding maintenance of the District facilities.
  • Fabricates equipment and materials for the purpose of constructing items in accordance with project requirements.
  • Inspects facilities and playgrounds for the purpose of ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations and identifying and correcting necessary repairs.
  • Installs a variety of facility component parts for the purpose of maintaining facilities in a safe, comfortable and operating condition.
  • Maintains tools and/or equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Operates equipment (e.g. back hoe, tractor, skid-steer loader, fork lift, dump truck, mower, snow removal equipment, chainsaws and various power tools, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining district property.
  • Orders equipment and supplies (e.g. replacement parts, materials, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.
  • Performs functions related to various trades (e.g. carpentry, painting, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, welding, masonry, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment in operating condition.
  • Prepares documentation and/or materials (e.g. reports, signs, nameplates, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support, conveying information and/or providing signage as needed.
  • Repairs various items, systems and/or components (e.g. safety rails, sidewalks, playground equipment, fences, park benches, gymnasium equipment, water systems, lighting fixtures/systems, carpeting, vinyl floors, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
  • Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or maintaining facilities in operational use.
  • Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, athletic equipment, supplies, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job sites and/or other district facilities.

Skills, Knowledge And AbilitiesSKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: prepare and maintaining accurate records; operating equipment used in skilled trades, power and hand tools, etc.; adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; planning and managing projects.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with constant and sustained interruptions; adhering to district policies; and regular attendance except when taking approved leave.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 30% walking, and 50% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
