Title: Assistant Women’s Cycling Coach

Category: Full-time, 12-month
Summary/Objective
Reporting to the Head Women’s Cycling Coach, the Assistant Cycling Coach is responsible for assisting the head coach in meeting the goals of guiding and building an elite-level program. This requires the promotion of academic achievement and character of the student-athlete, fans, and the overall College community. The Assistant Women’s Cycling Coach will be responsible for assisting the running of both the men’s and women’s cycling program (with primary duties towards the women’s team), recruiting, budget management, athlete development, and all aspects pertaining to the rules of Lees-McRae College, the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference, and USA Cycling Collegiate. A focus on recruitment and retention of student-athletes, competition preparation, generation of net tuition revenue, and meticulous budget management are essential for this position.
Essential Functions
  • Assist the Head Coach in the day-to-day operations which includes preparation, organization and implementation of effective practice schedules, off-season programs, and in-season competition.
  • Evaluation and recruitment of elite prospective student-athletes.
  • Lead rides and skills sessions on the mountain bike, cyclocross bike, and road bike.
  • Develop elite A and beginner B and C level athletes for optimal athletic performance.
  • Maintain trails on campus used by the mountain bike team.
  • Training and development of all student-athletes with a focus on the women’s team.
  • Monitoring student-athletes’ academic progress and growth as a person.
  • Individual workouts, conditioning, and strength training with team members.
  • Competition day meal planning and organization.
  • Travel coordination for away competitions
  • Investment in lives and growth of student-athletes
  • Assisting head coach in all phases of student-athlete mentoring and evaluation
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position will not directly supervise staff, but it will have responsibility for such when it comes to student assistants and/or managers.
Work Environment
Normal office environment in addition to non-traditional environment that includes gymnasiums, weight room, locker room, and outdoor venues. Coach will be outdoors frequently leading rides, team workouts, and on wooded trails for training and maintenance work.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, 12-month position. Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Frequent evening and weekend work is required for recruitment and competition events.
Travel
Extensive day and overnight travel is required as needed. Must possess a valid state-issued driver’s license and a clean driving record.
Required Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Previous coaching or cycling experience at the high school or college level
  • Excellent written and oral communication, well-developed presentation skills, and outstanding customer and quality service skills
  • Competency with Microsoft Office applications and social media marketing platforms
  • Ability to build relationships with student-athletes and families
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Experience with Slate or another CRM
  • Certifications: CPR, AED, and First Aid.

Physical Demands
Physical Demands
Coach should be actively riding and in good condition to lead team rides and skills sessions on the mountain bike, road bike, and cyclocross bike. Trail work and maintenance is expected, requiring the employee to occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and use tools. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Coach must be able to safely operate a lawn mower, leaf blower, weed whacker, hand saws, and chainsaw.
