ASTORIA SCHOOL DISTRICT 1C JOB DESCRIPTION

Astoria School District No. 1C is seeking applicants for the following position:

JOB TITLE: Instructional Assistant – English Language Learners (ELL) - 6.5 hrs/day - Lewis & Clark Elementary (3rd-5th)

REPORTS TO: Classroom Teacher, Site Administrator, Program Director

EVALUATED BY: Site Administrator, Program Director

JOB SUMMARY:

The job of the Educational Assistant – English Language Learners is done for the purpose(s) of assisting in the supervision and instruction of bilingual students and serving as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with non-English speaking students.

QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education
  • Fluent oral and written communication in English required
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Knowledge of English language (written and oral), principles of child development, instructional process, and Recordkeeping systems
  • Knowledge of audio-visual equipment and office machines and their operation
  • Knowledge of instructional materials and their uses
  • Basic understanding of students' behavior and methods to assure proper conduct
  • Understand safety practices
  • Read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions in English
  • Learn to operate telephones, computers, and other equipment used in the work, as required by the position
  • Ability to perform basic clerical functions, perform basic arithmetic calculations, operate standard office equipment
  • Use English in both written and verbal form, use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Accurately transfer, record and convey information, and materials as required by the position
  • Train and supervise student helpers
  • Communicate clearly and appropriately in speech and in writing in accordance with educational standards
  • Abide by confidentiality requirements
  • Rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of instructional settings
  • Adhere to the district requirements for a drug-free workplace
  • Perform physical requirements which may include:
    • Moderate degree of physical stamina
    • Frequent standing, walking, bending
    • Physically restraining a student as needed (OIS Certification required), per building need
    • Possible exposure to bodily fluids in assisting students with using restrooms and tending to illness or injury (Blood Borne Pathogen Training required)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administers tests and language assessments under the guidance of a classroom teacher or resource teacher for the purpose of evaluating students’ language ability
  • Assists teachers for the purpose of implementing lesson plans
  • As directed, confers with students, parents and/or appropriate community agency personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of students’ progress and/or implementing students’ objectives
  • Performs record keeping and basic clerical functions for the purpose of supporting teachers in maintaining students’ files and providing classroom materials in the students’ primary language
  • Records student progress in language acquisition for the purpose of documenting student performance and maintaining updated records
  • May be called upon to translate verbal and written communications for the purposes of assisting students, teachers and parents in communicating effectively
  • Participates in various meeting for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving the individual’s skills and knowledge
  • Assists with the preparation of instructional materials by using duplicating or AV equipment, and resource materials
  • Contributes to student effectiveness by maintaining classroom discipline
  • Acts as a mandated abuse reporter
  • Knowledge of Astoria School District Policies and building procedures
  • Regular and acceptable attendance is required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

POSITION BEGINS: August 26, 2024

SALARY RANGE: $21.65 Hourly
