Job Title: Skilled Maintenance Worker - Electrician

General Summary
Under general supervision performs maintenance and repairs involving the electrical systems in district facilities. Work involves locating and replacing electrical system malfunctions in district facilities.
Essential Functions
  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
  • Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with all stakeholders.
  • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive working and learning environment.
  • Receives work orders and meets with supervisor to discuss and plan daily activities.
  • Perform electrical repairs and maintenance such as replacing wiring devices, repairing and maintaining lighting equipment, switch equipment, fire alarm equipment, control panels, kitchen appliances, etc.
  • Install conduit, wire, computer cables, and circuit breakers.
  • Coordinates work with outside contractors as needed, including providing instruction and assistance in electrical installation, maintenance and repair.
  • Conduct all electrical duties in compliance with all local, state and national codes and standards.
  • Recommend supplies, materials and equipment for purchase in advance of critical need.
  • Safeguards district – owned tools, equipment, materials and supplies used in assigned activities.
  • Perform preventative maintenance as needed.
  • Direct the activities of assigned crew and/or lower level maintenance personnel which involve such duties as providing instructions, planning and coordinating work, and reviewing work.
  • Utilize various tools such as hand tools, electrical meters and instruments, pipe benders, cable and pipe locators, etc. Operate equipment such as bucket truck, ditch digger, service truck, drills and saws.
  • Interact with immediate supervisor, school employees, electricians, engineers, contractors and other maintenance staff.
  • Utilize electrical diagrams, blue prints, and troubleshooting charts in repairing, installing and maintaining electrical systems and apparatus.
  • Respond to after-hour emergency calls as required.
  • Participates in all professional meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Selects, requests, and maintains an inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies needed for daily activities; provides for safe storage and proper use of all materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Effectively uses personal technology devices and software applications for the management of pertinent information and communication.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Education/Work Experience
  • High school graduate or equivalent with vocational/technical school training in electrical construction or maintenance, and five to seven years of experience as an electrician; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • South Carolina Electrical Journeyman license
Knowledge/Skills
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and operations. Extensive knowledge of business English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mathematical computation. Knowledge of the principles of office management. Knowledge of the records and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Thorough knowledge in the methods and procedures used in the electrical maintenance, repair and installation. Complete and thorough knowledge of local, state and national building codes and standards related to the installation and maintenance of electrical systems. Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used for repair, installation and maintenance of electrical systems. Knowledge of the occupational and safety precautions of the trade. Knowledge of the trade terminology. Knowledge of Lockout /Tag out procedures. Knowledge of the proper and safe use of equipment and machinery necessary for assignment completion. Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions. Ability to perform manual work requiring physical strength and agility. Ability to work from work orders, blueprints, electrical diagrams and plans. Ability to work from direction of immediate supervisor. Ability to locate and repair electrical system malfunctions. Ability to repair, install, and/or maintain electrical devices, control panels, computer cable, conduit wire, appliances, and other electrical systems and devices incidental to the duties of the job. Ability to anticipate needed supplies, materials, tools and equipment needed for project completion. Ability to provide supervision and/or leadership to subordinate crew and/or maintenance personnel, and to outside contractors. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, colleagues and all other stakeholders involved in the activities of the job.
Working Conditions
Work is conducted indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to discomforting environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, noise, dust, and moisture. Heavy physical exertion is frequently required to move objects weighing up to one hundred-fifty pounds. Job requires operation of a vehicle for completion of daily duties: no overnight travel required.
Responsibility
No direct budgetary or supervisory responsibility.
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Staff.
