General SummaryUnder general supervision instructs students in health science theory and skills such as course competencies for Introduction to Health Science, Health Science I and II, Medical Terminology, Pharmacy Technician, and Clinical Studies.
Essential Functions
  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
  • Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, parents, colleagues and other stakeholders to foster student learning.
  • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning and working environment.
  • Demonstrates a variety of 21st century teaching skills to foster independent, creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers.
  • Designs and facilitates engaging, high level, sophisticated learning experiences and applications appropriate to prepare students for a 21st century global, knowledge-based society.
  • Teaches concepts and skills in human anatomy and physiology, disease processes, infection control, nutrition, patient care, and legal/ethical responsibilities and qualities of a healthcare professional.
  • Demonstrates and evaluates the effectiveness of both formative and summative assessments; analyzes assessment data in relation to student learning and develops instructional strategies to close the learning and performance gap; evaluates contributions in group projects.
  • Develops students’ creative and practical problem-solving skills related to relevant materials and processes of the industry.
  • Organizes classroom and laboratory areas for daily instruction.
  • Instructs and coaches students in the rudiments of obtaining and retaining a job; stays informed of current entry job requirements; completes job references for students when requested.
  • Recruits healthcare professionals to serve on the annual advisory committee; meets semi-annually to solicit input from community partners regarding current healthcare trends and employment opportunities
  • Identifies and maintains relationships with health care partners in the community to provide students with clinical experiences; coordinates and schedules school-to-work opportunities.
  • Serves as clinical instructor to student nursing assistants who are providing hands-on nursing care to patients in long-term care facilities.
  • Travels to various healthcare facilities to supervise students during school-to-work assignments.
  • Actively serves as an advisor to the local Health Occupations Students of America organization; plans and organizes field studies; chaperones students to state and national competitions.
  • Prepares various records and forms such as lesson plans, daily and weekly activity plans, assessments, material requisitions, competency forms, discipline reports, etc.
  • Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of student records, instructional efficiency, and professional development.
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  • Selects, requests, and maintains an inventory of instructional aides, technology tools, equipment, and supplies needed for daily activities; provides for safe storage and proper use of all materials, equipment and tools.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Education/Work Experience
  • Registered nursing degree; a minimum of three years experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Valid South Carolina teaching certification
  • Valid South Carolina nursing license
Knowledge/SkillsKnowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of and ability to implement training methods used in teaching health science concepts and skills to classroom students. Ability to provide instruction to students using 21st century teaching techniques and/or supervised practice. Knowledge of and ability to implement methods for developing lesson plans, materials and classroom activities which stimulate learning and provide for personalization. Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation and utilization of equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities. Knowledge of counseling methods necessary for handling student academic and adjustment problems. Knowledge of student services available and referral procedures. Ability to identify student adjustment and/or academic problems, provide counseling and/or recommend appropriate remedial action. Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations. Ability to demonstrate high level application of technology devices in the performance of daily activities. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and all other stakeholders involved in the activities of the job.
Working ConditionsConducts duties in a classroom and laboratory environment with routine exposure to medical equipment hazards. Requires constant attention working with students. Physical demands of laboratory/clinical duties require demonstrating proper body mechanics and lifting up to fifty pounds. Local travel is required; occasional overnight travel required. Requires the operation of general office, technology and medical equipment.
ResponsibilitySupervises students in classroom and laboratory situations. Responsible for classroom materials and supplies budget (if applicable). Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment; responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions.
EvaluationPerformance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the school board’s policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
