General SummaryUnder close supervision of a certified teacher, works with individuals or a small group of students identified as disabled under Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) in an effort to provide physical, emotional and academic support for them to gain maximum benefit from special education programs. Assists teachers with various classroom activities.
Essential Functions
  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
  • Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, teachers, administrators, colleagues and all stakeholders.
  • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning and working environment.
  • Assists teacher with primary academic instruction and classroom activities; prepares and disseminates materials for classroom activities.
  • Assists with physical health programs for students including such activities as physical therapy and assisting students with exercise, stretching, walking, etc.
  • As appropriate, assists teacher in the instruction of daily living routines such as personal hygiene, toileting, dressing, moving from room to room, getting on and off of school buses, self-feeding, drinking, etc.
  • Assists with and reinforces speech therapy lessons.
  • Adjusts special equipment for students use as needed.
  • Ensures the classroom is maintained in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Provides for basic first aid needs of students.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of personally identifiable data on students.
  • Assists with basic computer instruction as appropriate.
  • Monitors and inspects students' prosthesis, casts, braces, hearing aids, etc. for proper functioning.
  • Performs simple errands and tasks for students as needed such as sharpening pencils, carrying lunch trays, etc.
  • Assists teacher in taking students to activities in and out of the school building.
  • Participates in all professional meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Selects, requests, and maintains an inventory of instructional aides, technology tools, equipment, and supplies needed for daily use; provides for safe storage and proper use of all materials, equipment and tools.
  • Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of pertinent information and communication.
  • Operates general office equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Education/Work Experience
  • Two year degree, 60 hours of credit from an accredited institution or a passing score on the Para Pro examination; prior experience working with children preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge/SkillsKnowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of school policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and to complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to interact and communicate in an effective and professional manner with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public.
Working ConditionsConducts duties primarily in a classroom setting with no significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Requires ability to conduct duties that require constant attention working with students and interacting with a variety of adults. Physical demands are restricted to work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items up to fifty pounds. Occasional travel is required; no overnight travel required.
ResponsibilitySupervises students in classrooms, labs and other instructional areas as assigned.
EvaluationPerformance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board’s policy on evaluation of support personnel.
