Liberty Mutual is Hiring an Accounting Manager / Assistant Controller I - Reinsurance Near Boston, MA

Pay Philosophy
The typical starting salary range ($138,000 - $170,000) for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
Description
Depending on location, this may be a hybrid position and will require a minimum of 2 days in office.
Hybrid locations include: Boston MA, Portsmouth NH, Seattle WA, Columbus OH, Plano TX
This is a range posting. Candidates will be considered at the appropriate grade level depending on experience and qualifications.
The Reinsurance Operations Team provides accurate and insightful financial, analytical and claims information. We support the internal and external core reinsurance programs by providing a foundation to establish and enhance strategic product offerings through traditional and alternative reinsurance solutions for our global customers. Additionally, the Reinsurance Team safeguards company assets through proactive identification and management of reinsurance recoverables, the second largest Liberty Mutual asset.
Independently manages a bookclose and financial reporting team in a deadline focused environment with ultimate responsibility for the accuracy of highly complex work. Uses increasing insight to set strategic direction for the team in responding to emerging accounting issues and changes in the business environment. Communicates accounting issues, trends, and policies to a variety of audiences using a variety of means, including making presentations to senior management. Fosters the development of the team by setting objectives that challenge them while providing on-going coaching. Builds a culture of innovation to continuously improve processes to ensure work is performed in the fastest, most efficient means possible.
Responsibilities:
  • Ensures the accurate, timely completion of monthly, quarterly and annual book close cycles for a complex accounting function by effective planning, monitoring, and problem solving, specifically for Reinsurance Accounting/Operations.
  • Oversees the production of all financial reports issued by a complex accounting function, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting regulations.
  • Guides the team in researching highly complex accounting policy issues and developing processes to address them, ensuring the issues are communicated appropriately to senior management.
  • Develops, documents, and assures adherence to an internal control framework that ensures accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Makes recommendations to continuously improve the overall control environment.
  • Provides sound financial advice to business units or other departments, anticipating the financial statement impact of changes in the business environment and making recommendations to ensure appropriate and beneficial accounting treatment.
  • Understands how data flows through the financial systems to the accounting function, planning appropriately for changes and prioritizing and implementing enhancements.
  • Uses increasing insight to identify and implement improvements that increase the business value and efficiency of the work performed.
  • Initiates and/or leads increasingly complex projects and continuous improvement activities that may span beyond the scope of own team`s responsibilities.
  • Delivers business results while building the team`s capabilities by setting challenging objectives and coaching the team to achieve them.
  • Has the vision to create employee development plans that build strengths needed for the current operation and for the future.
  • Takes action to attract, engage, and advance the careers of people from all backgrounds and experiences.
  • May recommend changes to the structure of the organization to address changes in the business or improve customer service.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor`s degree (Accounting or Finance) is required
  • Knowledge of P&C Insurance or Reinsurance preferred
  • CPA or advanced degree in Accounting preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of accounting or finance experience
  • Management experience required, experience managing offshore team preferred.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to execute thoroughly in a fast-paced work environment, adapting quickly to changing conditions to achieve results
  • Must possess the ability to collaborate with peers across the organization to gain support for ideas and execute on projects that deliver value to customers
  • Comfortable leading meetings, making strategic recommendations to senior management and giving presentations to increasingly large audiences
  • Possesses an advanced understanding of accounting principles
