How You Will Make An ImpactThe Behavior Specialist will provide support, monitoring, and training using positive behavior intervention and support (PBIS), effective classroom management strategies, intervention strategies, coping skills, self-advocacy, and problem solving for students who experience behavioral challenges. This position reports to the Principal or Designee.

  • Develop individualized behavior and academic plans for identified students.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to create and execute intervention plans.
  • Engage, communicate effectively, and partner with Parents to promote a proactive approach to reinforcing Positive Behavior and self-advocacy in students.
  • Implement the responsible thinking process to encourage students to make healthy and safe choices – daily encouragers, community builders, and progress monitors.
  • Implement plans meant to improve behavior and develop social or independent living.
  • Monitor students in a classroom setting, provide behavioral coaching and academic instruction to students, and assist staff with tasks related to behavioral record-keeping and data entry.
  • Engage community partners in efforts to provide wrap-around services for students and families.
  • Establish positive relationships with students needing additional behavioral support through daily check-in, check-out processes, and other interventions.
  • Communicate with parents, visitors, and children positively and effectively, acknowledging all guests.
  • Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to school policies and procedures regarding absences and tardiness.
  • Assist students’ families in understanding the early intervention process and navigating intervention strategies.
  • Perform administrative duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned. These may be changed or modified from time to time.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of general needs and behavior of children diagnosed with autism; principles of child development and instructional processes; basic instructional methods and techniques; motivational techniques; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; safe and sanitary practices in classroom and playground activities; classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct; problems and concerns of students with special needs.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents, staff members, and community representatives in providing a rigorous educational program.
  • Ability to work effectively with all racial, ethnic, linguistic, disability, and socioeconomic groups.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including giving clear and concise instructions, using academic language, an appropriate delivery level, listening without bias, and providing proper feedback/reinforcement.
  • Ability to make independent judgments, meet deadlines and maintain accurate records.
  • Self-sufficient, strong interpersonal skills, and focused on excellent customer service.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Human Services, or related field or 2 years equivalent work experience demonstrating applicable skills in a relevant industry or discipline. Equivalent experience is included in and not separate from the total years.
  • Prior relevant experience with Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS), Response to Intervention (RIT), and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
  • Possession of a valid CPR/First Aid certificate is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Student Information Systems (SIS) and related Educational Systems.
  • Proficient skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and other technology applications.
  • Ability to travel in the performance of job duties is required.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
Physical Requirements
  • Mental Demands: high workflow management, high project coordination, and high people engagement.
  • Finger Dexterity: primarily using the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together.
  • Talking: especially where one must convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Average Hearing: hearing average or typical conversations and receiving ordinary information.
  • Average Visual Abilities: normal acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents and operate office equipment or machinery.
  • Frequent multi-tasking, changing of task priorities, repetitious exacting work required.
  • Prolonged period sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Working in a low to moderate noise environment with frequent deadline pressures.
