JOB SUMMARY

The minimum physical qualifications for this position include a combination of standing, sitting, bending, and reaching. Employees may work at computer monitors for prolonged periods, and exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions are possible. The position requires reaching, bending, stooping, handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs general nursing care to patients and administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Assists with the preparation of equipment and aids the physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
  • Observes, records, and reports patient’s condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians.
  • Oversees appointment bookings and ensures preferences are given to patients in emergency situations.
  • Greets patients and prepares them for examination, screening them for appropriate information.
  • Arranges for patient testing and admissions and instructs patients in collection of samples and tests.
  • Responds to and refers incoming telephone calls, instructing patients and families regarding medications and treatment instructions.
  • Formulates and updates patient care plans as necessary, ordering, preparing, and inspecting patients’ charts.
  • Prepares and administers vaccines and other therapeutic injections, maintaining inventory of drugs, vaccines, and medical supplies.
  • Collects patient’s vital signs and other measurements such as height and weight.
  • Maintains medical equipment and provides back-up phone support for triage nurses when necessary.
  • Provides information to patients and families regarding health prevention and promotion, completing documentation for schools or other entities as needed.
  • Participates in new patient orientation, attending meetings and participating in committees as required.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and completes insurance forms, communicating with insurance companies as needed.
  • Performs related work as required.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Knowledge of principles and skills needed for practical nursing/medical assisting to provide patient care and treatment to infants, children, and adolescents.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures in a pediatric clinic setting.
  • Knowledge of medications and their effects on pediatric patients.
  • Knowledge of pediatric patient wellness and safety principles.
  • Skill in administering a variety of treatments and medications.
  • Skill in using various types of equipment for examination and treatment procedures.
  • Skill in taking vital signs on infants, children, and adolescents.
  • Skill in maintaining records and writing reports.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing or medical assistant program.

Experience: Two years’ experience working with infant, child, and adolescent patients in a clinic setting is strongly preferred.

Certificate/License:

  • Valid Nebraska state license to practice practical nursing or medical assistant certification.
  • Infant and adult CPR certification.
