Lincoln University of Missouri is Hiring an Assistant Professor of Mathematics/Math Center Director Near Jefferson, MO

Purpose:

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track appointment beginning August 2024. The faculty expectations include teaching undergraduate and occasionally graduate courses in introductory, classical and applied mathematics and establishing a research program in any area of mathematics that involves undergraduate students. Lincoln University faculty are also expected to also advise and mentor students and participate in campus initiatives as well departmental and institutional committees.

The Director will manage the staff and develop services of the newly established Math Center. The Math Center aims to support student success by providing tutoring to students, mathematics pedagogy assistance to faculty as well as advanced mathematics support in upper-level courses or in small faculty-led projects. The Center will coordinate its student-support services with the Office of the Provost. The position is a fifty-fifty split appointment, between the faculty and Director responsibilities, during the academic year and a full-time appointment as the Director in the summer.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in introductory, classical and applied mathematics with an understanding of varied classroom pedagogies to enable student success.
  • Develop an active, externally funded research program in mathematics or mathematics education that involves undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting equitable learning practices and creating inclusive, accessible learning environments for diverse populations.
  • Excellent organizational and management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders as well as excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Lead and motivate the Math Center team members by developing them professionally and personally.
  • Monitor and grow overall center performance metrics, including student success and retention in math courses.
  • Work in collaboration with the Office of the Provost, Academic Success Center to support campus-wide retention efforts.
  • Work with the Office of Institutional Research to assess student academic progress and success.
  • Participate in Academic Affairs Strategic Planning.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

  • Experience in Mathematics Center operations including tutor training.
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in a university or community college Mathematics tutoring center.
  • Prior teaching experience and understanding of mathematics pedagogy.
  • Experience in Mathematics Tutoring center administration.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

PhD in any area of Mathematics or Mathematics Education, or a closely related field is required with demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: working with underprepared students, mathematics tutoring, developmental mathematics pedagogy and approaches, and working with underserved populations.

Experience in Mathematics Tutoring Center administration or a similar management experience is strongly preferred. Exceptional candidates who are ABD in a doctoral program in mathematics or mathematics education or a closely related area and who have significant experience in working in and the management and operations of a math tutoring center are encouraged to apply as well.

Physical Demands:

  • Light sedentary office work.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing/walking.
