Linn County, IA is Hiring a RESERVE (VOLUNTEER) DEPUTY SHERIFF Near Rapids, IA

The following are the expectations for physical requirements, training and participation forthe position of Reserve Deputy in the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

I. Physical Requirements

  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 66 years of age.
  • Candidates must participate in a physical fitness test conducted by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. The testing consists of a timed sit up, push up, and a one- and one-half mile run. The physical standards are set by the State of Iowa and are grouped by age and sex.
  • Eyesight and hearing requirements are set forth under Iowa Code Section 501.10.1 and must be complied with by law.
  • Candidates must be of good moral character and hold a valid Iowa Driver’s License. Further, candidates must be a high school graduate and never have been convicted of a felony. Applicants must also accurately list any misdemeanor criminal or traffic convictions on the application.


II. Training

  • Candidates will participate in a regional Academy for Reserve Officers consisting of 180 hours of training. The curriculum is defined by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. The training academy will be provided by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. Candidates may not miss a training session during the academy. All classes are required and cannot be repeated.
  • Upon graduation, all officers are certified by the State of Iowa as a Reserve Officer, as defined by the Code of Iowa 80.D.
  • After graduation, Special Deputies will work only in the Correctional Center for a minimum period of six months or until completion of a training program. Upon completion of the Correctional Center training, Special Deputies may begin to work with the Patrol Division, where they will be required to complete a Patrol Training Program.
  • For a period of one year, all Special Deputies are on probation.
  • As required by the State of Iowa, 12 hours of continuing education and weapons qualifications must be completed annually, in order to maintain a Reserve Officer Certification.


III. Job Description

  • Special Deputies may assist in Patrol, Corrections, Detective and Civil divisions of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. Special Deputies have all the powers and perform all the functions of a regular Linn County Deputy, but will always act under the direction of a regular Deputy Sheriff.
  • In addition to assisting regular functions of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the Special Deputies Association perform the following functions:
  • McGruff appearances
  • Appearances at Fairs & parades
  • Operation of a speed measuring trailer
  • Boat Patrol on the Cedar River
  • Other various special needs
  • Special Deputies must comply with all Participation Requirements as defined in Section IV of this document.
  • After completion of a one year probationary period, and if the Special Deputy is current with the Participation Requirements, “Extra Jobs” may be worked for pay through the Linn County Sheriff’s Association.


IV. Minimum Participation Requirements

  • Special Deputies must work a minimum of 8 hours monthly. If difficulty in achieving this arises, 24 hours within a quarter may be allowed.
  • A minimum of one Public Relation job (any function listed in Section III.b – 1 through 4) per quarter is required. More participation is encouraged.
  • One shift of Boat Patrol per summer is required.
  • Attendance is mandatory at training sessions. Acceptable excuses are working your regular job or out of town vacations. All certified training sessions, i.e. CPR, First Aid, weapons, etc., must be made up if missed.
