Job Description

The Design Physics Division (DPD) has an opening for the High Energy Density Project Leader within the Weapon Simulation and Computing Computational Physics (WSC/CP) program. As a member of the WSC/CP Project Coordination Council (PCC), this individual will be part of the leadership team for the SD code enterprise. This position is in the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Directorate.

This is a nominally quarter-time position: you will maintain other assignments for the balance of your time.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Shape strategy and ensure execution for the portfolio of SD-funded projects supporting the core LLNL high energy density simulation tools used by Weapons Physics and Design Program.
  • Participate in the WSC/CP Project Coordination Council to both represent the needs of HED simulation tools and help formulate strategies meeting the collective objectives of the WSC/CP portfolio.
  • Coordinate with appropriate line management and supervisors for the technical staff that develop, maintain, and provide user support for these engineering simulation software products.
  • Recognize, create, and implement plans to promote and foster a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.5 level

  • Serve as subject matter expert in high energy density simulation tools and analysis for the Program at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers.
Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Doctoral degree in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Computational Science or the equivalent combination of education and prior experience.
  • Significant experience and advanced knowledge of computational physics in some of the following areas: hydrodynamics, radiation transport, numerical methods, plasma physics, material modelling, high-performance computing and others.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
  • Requires experience leading a team, project, and/or group.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.5 level

  • Extensive experience in the leadership of technical projects, project planning, and execution.
  • Significant experience developing and implementing creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Subject matter expertise in one or more of the following topical areas: hydrodynamics, radiation transport, numerical methods, plasma physics, material modelling, high-performance computing, and others.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Significant experience using Kull simulation software and familiarity with other developmental, government, or commercial tools such as visit, totalview, pmesh, overlink, and/or other multi-physics, analysis, or utility code suites.
  • Knowledge of Program and Laboratory management and structure.
  • Knowledge and experience with modern software development practices, especially for High-Performance Computing Environments.
  • Knowledge of external software capabilities, both commercial and other national laboratories.
  • Proven advanced ability to lead and promote technical projects.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing plans that promote and value inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability principles in the workplace.
