Long Island University is Hiring an Associate Director-Student Engagement Near Brooklyn, NY

The Associate Director serves as a team leader within the Promise division and provides oversight to areas under Student Involvement. Reporting to the Director of LIU Promise, the Associate Director ensures delivery of essential services and programming to ensure student retention, persistence and degree completion. The Associate Director is responsible for execution of programming to engage students and create a vibrant campus life. The Associate Director will work as a member of the LIU Promise leadership team and will oversee all operations, services and will assist leadership with strategic planning.

  • Initiative: identifying what needs to be done and doing it before being asked or before the situation requires it.
Principal Responsibilities: Overall management of the daily operations of LIU Promise, including serving on the departmental leadership team to ensure successful execution of academic and career success, student engagement, residence life and community standards, veterans affairs, student programming, LIU Cares, and other key student affairs functions.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of professional staff members including establishing goals and fostering professional development opportunities, monitor goals for team and meet recruitment and retention goals.
  • Hold regular team meetings and staff one-on-one meetings.
  • Facilitate, participate and oversee training/development programs for professional staff.
  • Serve as primary advisor and success coach for working caseload of students.
  • Collaborate with various offices to support recruitment and retention efforts and events.
  • Support the student experience through the LIU four-year model from pre-enrollment through graduation.
  • Assist in pre-enrollment, admissions, orientation, campus, and career activities reinforcing the importance of a collective, integrated college experience geared toward academic and career success.
  • Prepare students for their transition to the college, and integrate new students into the intellectual, cultural, and social life of the University.
  • Plan and execute campus programming, including but not limited to campus engagement, student involvement, career success and academic success.
  • Ensure accurate academic advisement to each student, specifically through the progression of the initial registration upon acceptance to major/degree selection as it pertains to career interests and pursuits.
  • Interpret career assessment instruments and provide career resources/advisement, developing a timely career track congruent with students’ academic pursuits.
  • Assess need for and provide override/approval access to financial aid, academic advising and other pertinent campus functions.
  • Attend meetings, participate in campus-wide committees, and assist with annual projects and events assigned.
  • Coordinate with counterpart(s) on other campuses to ensure a streamlined and uniform LIU student experience.
  • Other duties as assigned by Directors in LIU Promise.

  • Develop campus-wide programming, traditions and initiatives that enhance a vibrant campus life experience for all students, both residing on-campus and commuting.
  • Provide leadership to LIU Cares, the University-wide service initiative by creating opportunities on-campus and in the community.
  • Facilitate the student leadership program and manage student organizations and Greek Life.
  • Develop and execute new student orientation programs.
  • Create, design and execute marketing material for all campus events.
  • Recruit, train and hire a cohort of student leaders to serve as orientation leaders, resident assistants and student workers.
  • Provide weekend and evening coverage of student life and student organization programs.

Education RequirementsMaster’s Degree Required
Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience
  • At least 2-4 years of progressively professional experience in higher education, student affairs; sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Proven track record of success managing co-curricular activities and/or academic support services.
  • Appreciation for cultural differences and global values.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Facility with database management systems.
  • High energy and enthusiasm to work with students and propel them toward success.
Working Conditions
  • Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, are required to execute the position’s role responsibly.
  • Occasional travel to/from other LIU campuses for the facilitation of trainings, meetings and other university functions.
