Long Island University is Hiring a Director of Sponsored Projects Near Brookville, NY

Long Island University is a national teaching and research institution with R2 Carnegie Classification. The Director for Sponsored Projects oversees the operations and management of the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP), including pre-, post-award and compliance with federal and other relevant regulations for sponsored research and grant awards. The Director is the University’s authorized organizational representative (AOR). The Director ensures OSP has current, comprehensive policies and procedures to support all aspects of effective sponsored projects administration. The Director supervises staff, implements structures, assigns duties, and carries our functions and responsibilities for efficient and effective OSP operations. The Director implements programs, including principal investigator communication and training, to ensure LIU maximizes its competitiveness in receiving and completing sponsored awards. Periodically, the Director will establish guidelines, assess processes, and review timeframes overseeing all phases of sponsored projects, including proposal initiation and pre-award submissions; administer post-award, reporting and compliance functions. The Director serves on a number of committees and advises the Contract Research Organization and senior leadership on matters important to sponsored projects administration.
The OSP represents a key unit in the furtherance of LIU’s research aspirations and thus should be a collaborative unit within Academic Affairs, colleges, business and finance and other units on campus providing a foundation to promote growth of sponsored project awards at Long Island University.

  • Supports Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and VP for Research in managing and delivering the University’s sponsored research agenda in alignment with the LIU Strategic Plan.
  • Serves as the AOR (Authorized Organizational Representative) for LIU.
  • Prepares analyses and projections for all aspects of pre-award grant administration.
  • Manages reporting, regulatory, and fiduciary responsibilities associated with each funding agency.
  • Manages and oversees pre- post-award and accounting for sponsored projects, including initial exploration for potential grant opportunities; creation of timelines; identification of resources; proposal and report; dealing with sponsors; ensuring efficient applications/submissions; initiate and complete award transfers, amendments and other contractual administration from funding agencies.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates staff in the Office of Sponsored Projects.
  • Represents the University in negotiation of resulting grants, contracts, and agreements; collaborates with outside agencies and organizations for grant development and implementation; and networks with internal and external grant stakeholders, as well as other grant development professionals.
  • Provides direction for interpretation of Uniform Guidance, OMB and Code of Federal Regulations for sponsored awards.
  • Develops reports and responds to inquiries, trouble shoots and keeps records including data, analysis and compilation for sponsor guidelines, national surveys.
  • Interprets and applies University policies and procedures regarding sponsored projects.
  • Identifies potential threats to sponsored projects administration and oversees compliance and regulatory frameworks, risk management related to sponsored projects.
  • Stays current in relation to changing grant standards and proposal guidelines and communicates relevant information to stakeholders (PIs, Co-PIs, etc.) accordingly.
  • Develops procedures to encourage and assist grant proposal submission. Oversees OSP departmental budget.
  • Presents training and information as required.
Required Skill Sets
  • Handling the demands and requirements of senior-level management in higher education.
  • Understanding of the university philosophy and mission.
  • An understanding of Grant development services.
  • An understanding of Grant standards and proposal guidelines.
  • Familiarity with research administration.
RequiredWork Experience
  • Five years research sponsored project administration (pre-post and closeout) experience with federal funding including supervisory experience.
Preferred
  • 10 years research and sponsored project administration with federal, state and other sponsored projects and contracts administration. Research administration, NCURA or SRA certifications, CPA.
EducationRequired
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
Preferred
  • Advanced degree or certification demonstrating competence in sponsored programs, research administration.
