SUMMARY

The Biomedical Technician plays a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the hospital's medical equipment and technology, ensuring optimal performance and safety in patient care. In this position, you will be responsible for the installation, calibration, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of medical devices and systems, including imaging equipment, surgical instruments, and monitoring devices.

Working closely with clinical staff, you will assess the functionality and reliability of medical equipment, provide technical support, and train healthcare personnel on proper usage. The Biomedical Technician will also participate in the evaluation and selection of new equipment, ensuring that all technologies meet hospital standards and regulatory requirements.

Ideal candidates will possess strong problem-solving skills, a solid understanding of biomedical engineering principles, and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. This role is essential in supporting the hospital's mission to provide high-quality patient care through innovative medical technology.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Plans, designs, build and modify solutions to existing equipment.
  2. Troubleshoots and repairs malfunctioning patient care, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
  3. Provides Engineering solutions for custom requirements or out-of-support equipment including preventative maintenance procedures.
  4. Monitors equipment and performs regular corrective and preventive maintenance in accordance with manufacture guidelines and ensures proper calibration for safe and efficient operation.
  5. Provides technical service support and reviews medical alerts ensuring that medical equipment is in compliance.
  6. Analyzes cost and benefit trends for equipment purchases. 
  7. Evaluates new equipment prior to purchase through consultation with physicians, nurses, managers, manufacturers and suppliers.
  8. Unpacks, assembles, inspects and calibrates all new equipment according to manufacturer specifications.
  9. Safely installs new equipment according to standard.
  10. Participates in internal and external quality assurance/quality control programs as required by local protocol and government regulations/standards (e.g., TCJ, ACHC, etc.).
  11. Develop and maintain a comprehensive database for all medical systems, their components and scheduled maintenance. 
  12. Organizes schedules to ensure that inventory is available for planned maintenance.
  13. Maintains comprehensive logs of equipment maintenance and repairs.
  14. In conjunction with Risk Management, participates in incident investigations involving medical equipment that affects patients or staff. 
  15. Research and reviews new technology and equipment.
  16. Acts as a medical equipment information resource for various departments, staff and equipment users.
  17. Conducts training for physicians, staff and patients on the operation and maintenance of various medical devices.
  18. Informs staff of possible occurrences and provides solutions for correction.
  19. Informs staff of upgrades and operable changes to medical equipment.
  20. Maintains inventory for both high maintenance equipment and routine maintenance items.
  21. Provides cost-effective alternative part solutions.
  22. Reviews service contracts for efficiency.
  23. Manages time in a productive and reliable manner, completing work assignments.
  24. Performs other related duties as assigned, relevant to the job.
  25. Understands and adheres to The Loretto Hospital compliance standards. 
  26. Keep abreast of all pertinent Federal, State and local regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Biomedical Engineering Degree or a Degree in Electronics is required. Two- or three-years related experience in the healthcare field is desired. In addition, six months on-the-job training or a total of three years on-the-job experience at a hospital is preferred. Must possess the ability to effectively present information to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. A valid driver’s license is required.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Advanced computer skills, interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently are essential requirements for this task. The ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure is required.
