What You Will DoCome join a team of staff that is working to organize, digitize, and catalog the most mission-critical physical collections at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). You will be on a dynamic team, supporting the Weapons Program, working for the Weapons Research Services - National Security Research Center Digital Collections Group. The information you organize, digitize, and catalog will have an immediate impact to the Laboratory's mission.
You will be working with one of the largest libraries in the Federal Government, the National Security Research Center (NSRC). The NSRC is LANL's classified library, containing tens of millions of documents, films, books, and other archival material related to the development, testing and production of nuclear weapons, dating back to the first days of the Manhattan Project. The NSRC's collections contain a breadth of classified technical information related to physics, chemistry, engineering, material science, and national security.
As a Digitizer Archivist (Library Professional 2) you will be digitizing primary source materials and creating metadata/indexing information in support of a robust catalog/index in collaboration with the NSRC Digital Collections Team Leaders to assist in the retrieval of the material. You will provide quality control for digitized materials, metadata, and indexing and assist with the upload of digitized material and associated catalog information into the NSRC's Online Vault database and other WRS-supported repositories. This will also include actively seeking out improvements to the digitization processes and interfacing with customers to provide material assessments and acquisition support. You will serve as technical lead for at least one type of material digitized in our group and will be relied upon for coordinating projects and providing training and mentorship to junior staff.
What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:Technical Knowledge: You must have experience in operating multiple types of professional digitizing equipment for various media, such as paper, microfilm, microfiche, video, or other media. This experience must include developing indices/inventories of moderate to large collections. This position will also require experience in maintaining and working within metadata standards for archival materials and for developing a robust catalog that meets researcher needs.
Digitization Workflows & Processes: A qualified candidate will have experience with assessing collections and supporting or leading the development, implementation, and improvement of digitization workflows and processes.
Customer Relations: You will need experience handling sensitive situations, using sound and independent judgement. This position will require experience supporting customer requests and managing priorities and deadlines. This includes the creation and maintenance of digitization and indexing guides and digitization machine usage instructions. You must also have experience directly interfacing with customers.
Education/Experience: This position requires a master's degree in library and information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and 5 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An American Library Association (ALA) accredited MLS degree; or a master's degree specializing in archives management, records management, or a related degree is preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists is preferred.
  • Understanding of the weapons program within LANL, along with experience working with classified material in a classified environment
  • Experience working in a major archival organization, such as the National Archives and Records Administration, a museum, or a library with significant archival holdings. Experience assisting scientists and/or engineers search for relevant materials in a major university, government, or corporate library is desirable.
  • Background in information technology, physics, chemistry, engineering, or material science.
  • Experience with standard digital archival and library cataloging systems and metadata structures.
  • Demonstrated experience in continuous learning to enhance knowledge and required skills.
  • Active DOE Q clearance is highly desirable.
Work Environment:Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional DetailsDirective 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
