Los Alamos National Laboratory is Hiring a Physics and Chemistry of Materials Undergraduate Student Near Los Alamos, NM

What You Will Do
We are looking for candidates to join our team in Los Alamos National Laboratory's Theoretical Division (T-Division), Physics and Chemistry of Materials group (T-1). T-Division provides a unique and engaging environment that fosters multi-disciplinary collaborations to support the laboratory's strategic basic research and national security missions. The Physics and Chemistry of Materials group seeks to understand how basic forces operating at the atomic level manifest themselves in the properties of matter at the macroscopic level. The group maintains theory, modeling and simulation capabilities in a broad set of materials-related areas. Current activities in the group include research in atoms, molecules, solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas. Our goal is to provide innovative and creative solutions needed to solve technical problems across the Laboratory's missions, including energy security, stockpile stewardship, and global threat reduction.
The Physics and Chemistry of Materials group is seeking qualified candidates to hire as undergraduate Students to work within our research teams. This is an educational opportunity for the selected candidates to contribute to cutting-edge scientific research and to learn new skills and areas. Selected students must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 on their undergraduate work. Typical summer internship is 10-12 weeks. Selected candidates will be paired with a mentoring team and will work closely with one of the scientific teams within T-1.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Enrollment in a Bachelor's Degree program in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or closely related field
  • A minimum 3.0 out of 4.0 GPA
  • Familiarity with the usage of scientific software packages and how to perform analytical calculations
  • Ability to work within a collaborative team environment
  • Desire to learn new things and openness to work on different projects
Education/Experience: Current enrollment in a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics, engineering, physics, or a related field
Desired Qualifications:
Experience in one or more of the following topical areas:
  • Computer programming (Python, C , etc.) in support of scientific or engineering applications;
  • Application of advanced mathematical methods to develop models of physical phenomena;
  • Familiarity with scientific research methods and data demonstrated by completed coursework in the natural sciences;
  • Familiarity with cutting edge computational research in applications such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum computing;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context.

Location
This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
