Job Description:
The Associate Director (AD) and Chief Clinical Veterinarian (CCV) will provide direct oversight of veterinary medical care for the university. This includes a broad range of species including small and large mammals, fish, amphibians, and reptiles. The position will directly oversee the Laboratory Animal Medicine residency program and their daily duties providing veterinary care for the university. The position will answer directly to the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) Director and Attending Veterinarian (AV) and will support the entire animal care and quality control program. Additionally, the position will participate in training of Phase I and Phase II professional students. Research support and collaboration with university faculty are expected.
Job Responsibilities:
75% - Service: The Associate Director (AD) and Chief Clinical Veterinarian (CCV) will provide veterinary care for university owned animals and will serve as the Alternate Attending Veterinarian in the absence of the DLAM Director/AV. The AD/CCV will oversee quality control testing, development, and implementation as it relates to our PHS assurance statement, AAALAC Int. site document, as well as DLAM standard operating procedures. The AD/CCV will provide animal care, use protocol advice and veterinary support to the general LSU research community. After one (1) year on the job the AD/CCV will alternate with the AV, yearly, by serving on the LSU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The AD/CCV will provide direct oversight of veterinary technicians. Furthermore, the AD/CCV will be expected to participate in the care of the LSU mascot, Mike the Tiger.
10% - Research: The AD/CCV will provide research support for an ever increasing number of animals and species. Support with include protocol development, veterinary consultation, and direct collaboration leading to publications and presentations are expected.
10% - Teaching: After approximately 1 year the AD/CCV will take over as course coordinator for the Laboratory Animal Medicine Phase II Clinical Rotation for professional students. Additionally, it is expected the AD/CCV will take over as the LSU Laboratory Animal Residency Program Director. The AD/CCV will provide training to veterinary residents, professional students, research faculty, staff, and students, as well as DLAM staff. This will include direct oversight of wet-lab training as required for research personnel.
5% - Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
DVM or equivalent and board eligible for the ACLAM exam.
License to practice veterinary medicine in at least one US state. The successful candidate will be required to obtain a Louisiana Veterinary Medical license within 6 months of hire. Additionally, it is expected the successful candidate will obtain USDA Class II veterinary accreditation.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree with 2 or more years of related experience working as a laboratory animal medicine veterinarian with a broad range of species.
Special and Physical Qualifications:
Vehicle Operation -University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.
Safety and Security Sensitive Job - Safety and security-sensitive positions are defined as those positions where any form of substance abuse may affect University activities through unsafe work behavior/performance or error in judgment; or where substance abuse could jeopardize the safety and well-being of employees, other personnel, or the general public, or cause significant damage to University property. This includes positions requiring firearms, access to controlled substances, handling hazardous material, operating heavy equipment or machinery, etc. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04.
Essential Personnel -This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.
FERPA -As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
Required to be capable of lifting 50 pounds, standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, twisting, pushing/pulling, grasping, and squatting.
