Job Description:
The ophthalmology service schedules appointments during normal hours of operation Monday through Friday. In addition, emergency cases are seen after hours as needed an ophthalmologist is on call, available for consult and to come in for these cases. The technicians with this service facilitate and increase efficiency in the work flow and management of the service and ultimate patient care from initial contact with a client or referring DVM, through to patient dismissal. All aspects in-between involve these technicians customer service, patient care, and teaching.
Veterinary Technician 1
  • 40% Assist with the receiving and discharge of ophthalmology patients as needed. Assist students and house officers with performing routine ophthalmic diagnostic testing including conjunctival culture, cytology, Schirmer tear test, fluorescein dye test, tonometry, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and physical examinations. Assist in preparation for ophthalmic examination of large animal and exotic patients. Assist with the daytime treatments of hospitalized small animal ophthalmology patients.
  • 30% Prepare for and assist with electroretinography in small animals. Assist in pre-operative patient preparation including submission of laboratory work, surgery/anesthesia paperwork, EKG, obtaining an ocular ultrasound, ordering of medications. Assist in patient preparation for small animal ophthalmology surgery cases, as well as post-op management and evaluation. Assist in perioperative procedures as needed.
  • 20% Maintain/facilitate monthly ophthalmology case logs and download of patient images into a searchable ophthalmology database. Order and maintain inventory for department. Clean and sanitize exam rooms and treatment room area as needed. Clean and maintain ophthalmology equipment.
  • 10% Participate with blood bank and on-call, holiday, and emergency shifts in ICU. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree OR Associate's degree in veterinary technology OR CVT or equivalent OR 3 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties

Bachelor's Degree with 3 years of applicable experience OR Associate's degree in veterinary technology with 2 years of applicable experience OR CVT or equivalent with 2 years of applicable experience OR 5 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties OR 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Technician 1 at LSU SVM
Veterinary Technician 3
  • 40% Receive and discharge ophthalmology patients as needed. Teach students and house officers how to perform routine ophthalmic diagnostic testing including conjunctival culture, cytology, Schirmer tear test, fluorescein dye test, tonometry, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and physical examinations. Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree with 4 years of applicable experience OR Associate's degree in veterinary technology with 4 years experience OR Certification as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years experience OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.
Preferred Certifications/ Licenses (ALL LEVELS):
CVT/RVT/LVT Certified, Registered or Licensed Veterinary Technician
Special or Physical Qualifications (ALL LEVELS):
Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
Due to the nature of this position and/or responsibilities, this position is subject to random drug & alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67*
Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, climbing, grasping, crawling bending, squatting, and/or twisting.
