Summary

This is general highway maintenance entry level work involving the maintenance and painting of street name signs and posts.

Work involves responsibility for safe and effective use of hand tools in basic highway maintenance. Duties include using hand tools and the ability to work on small ladder. This position also has the responsibility for making basic laboring decisions in accordance with established procedures. This work requires that the employee have some knowledge, skill and ability in manual laboring, safety, and equipment operations.
Works under the immediate supervision of a Crew Leader.
Duties

Places highway barriers and performs related maintenance tasks using hand tools.

Assists in routine street maintenance as assigned.

Cuts brush, clears land and picks up leaves and other material, as may be associated with street name sign painting.

Maintains the cleanliness and service of roadways and public areas.

Loads and unloads truck of construction material needed for daily tasks.

Prepares materials, including paint, for traffic sign and roadway line painting.

Installs, removes, maintains, places and repairs traffic signage and barriers.

Uses sledgehammer and other tools to place signposts in the ground.

Reads and interprets written work orders associated with daily assignments.

Repairs signs using sanding, cutting and smoothing machinery.
Performs work in a safe manner and observes all safety procedures.

Uses all tools, equipment and materials responsibly.
Performs basic inspection of tools prior to use and cleans tools after use.

May be assigned to other Public Works divisions to perform required duties.

Performs related work as required.
Qualifications

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; or be age 15 and currently enrolled in a Vocational/Technical School that is eligible to participate in a Co-Op program that provides both liability and Workers Compensation coverage for Co-Op students. Proof of enrollment and insurance coverage will be required.
Valid Class C Driver's License.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and learn Township procedures.

Verifiable knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, safety procedures and work standards.

Ability to perform manual labor in highway maintenance safely, effectively and efficiently.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with supervisors, co-workers, contractors and the general public.

Ability to operate small hand-held power equipment.

Ability to utilize traffic sign and line crew tools such as hand trucks, paint mixers and sledgehammers.
Physical Requirements

Ability to sit for a minimum of 1 up to 8 hours, stand for a minimum of 2 up to 8 hours, and walk for a minimum of 2 up to 8 hours per workday.
Ability to bend, stoop, squat, climb, reach above shoulder level, crouch, kneel, lift, and push/pull for up to 75% of the workday.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of tools, equipment and materials for up to 68% of the workday and lift and carry up to 100 pounds of tools, equipment and materials for up to 35% of the workday.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods using safety precautions where environmental conditions may be challenging.

Ability to move 55-gallon paint cans using hand trucks.

Ability to use both hands for firm grasping of objects.

Ability to use both hands for making precise cuts in creating signs.

Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions around moving machinery.

Ability to repeatedly lift and carry heavy objects using safety precautions.

Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions where loud noise may be present.

Ability to perform job functions in all types of weather and temperatures.

Ability to drive an automobile.
