Position Summary and Duties : The Carpenter performs a variety of duties related to general maintenance work. This includes building new walls and ceilings, modifying and maintaining all interior spaces, exterior building spaces, and roofs.

This is an essential position for the maintenance and operation of the campus and will respond to emergencies. The Carpenter reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions :

Constructs, alters, repairs and maintains doors, roofs, windows, furniture, scaffolds, concrete forms and other structural components of buildings using hand and power tools such as drills, joiners, sanders, saws, and other equipment of the carpentry trade.

Removes walls, repairs walls, installs partitions and steps; renovates rooms within buildings using hand and power tools.

Prepares walls for paint and completes painting as needed. Installs and furnishes dry wall, wood paneling, siding and other prefabricated materials.

Installs wood, ceramic, resilient, or cement floors. Installs glass, ceiling, windows and doors. Fits, installs and maintains finished hardware such as closures and kick plates.

Operates, maintains, and ensures adequate supplies, tools, power tools, and equipment. Reviews blueprints and work orders to determine materials needed for assigned work.

Performs routine maintenance and repairs of structural components of campus buildings. Responds to repair requests, troubleshoot problems and make necessary repairs as needed.

Participates in all essential weather related operations including snow and ice removal. Participates in on-call rotations, and responds to emergency calls.

This is a full time position scheduled to work : Monday through Friday 7 : 30am to 4pm, with 1 hour for lunch.

  • Required Qualifications : High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to drive a University Vehicle.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of carpentry, masonry and drywall installation and repair.
  • Knowledge on repairing / installing entry doors and frames, installing / repairing door hardware (closers, locks and hinges).
  • Ability to read and explain manufacturer recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance, servicing and operation.
  • Knowledge of different types of roofing material and the ability to repair those different types of roofs.
  • Ability to perform repairs to structural components of buildings including dry walling and painting. Ability to use power tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, evenings and holidays as required.
  • Must be able to rotate through on-call duties, covering evenings and weekends per the on-call procedures and guidelines.
  • Ability to support the mission and values of a Catholic Jesuit education, as well as University goals for institutional diversity.

Physical and Environmental Demands Include :

Work involves regular performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined space, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pounds) items and occasionally very heavy (I00 pounds or over) items.

The work environment involves exposure to various elements such as chemicals, dust, fumes, cold, heat, noise, vibrations, or dampness, where work exposes the employee to potentially non-disabling injuries.

Duties require that work be performed in adverse weather conditions. Work may require exposure to dangerous equipment and machinery .

Work may requires use of protective clothing or gear such as earplugs, hard hats, mask, gloves, insulated clothing, boots, coats, etc.

Ability to work from ladders and scaffolding.

Preferred Qualifications : Carpentry experience 5-8 years
