Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is Hiring a Veterinary Medical Technician Near Florence, SC

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue seeks a medical technician to assist with the care of dogs and cats at our rescue campus in Florence, SC. This position includes everything from assisting in surgery to administering medications to cleaning kennels in our ICU building. The ideal candidate will have prior experience as a veterinary assistant or medical technician, will be a self-starter who can problem-solve independently, and who is dedicated to the mission of saving animals in need.

Position Overview

The medical technician position is designed to work closely and efficiently with staff veterinarians and other medical and kennel staff to ensure all animals receive proper medical treatment, preventatives, vaccines, deworming and surgical treatment, and to ensure those treatments are properly recorded/charted. This position reports jointly to the Team Lead for South Carolina and the Lead Veterinarian.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: :

  • Communicate efficiently with staff veterinarian(s) and other employees regarding all aspects of animal care
  • Perform, chart, and schedule treatments at intake
  • Perform basic intake and surgical pre-op exams on dogs and cats
  • Calculate proper medication doses
  • Convert pounds to kg and kg to pounds
  • Administer injectable medications at the proper dosage and route
  • Perform intravenous injections and IV catheterization
  • Be proficient at animal restraint and handling
  • Be able to properly identify puppies and kittens, including determining estimated age, sex, breed, and weight
  • Recognize and flag for the veterinarian abnormalities in animals that could indicate a medical issue
  • Efficiently chart in shelterluv all treatments administered, tests performed, medical memos, and schedule treatments correctly
  • Correctly enter patient information on team SC master list to track patients with medical issues
  • Be familiar with and correctly execute bio security protocols
  • Oversee ICU operations, organization, and management of animals in care, including keeping ICU stocked, clean, and organized
  • Alert management when supplies are running low
  • Properly train and advise kennel staff on feeding protocols
  • Be proficient at performing and interpreting diagnostic testing such as heartworm testing, Felv/FIV testing, wood’s lamp examination, and fecal testing
  • Be familiar with medications and their normal usage and administration
  • Be able to fill medications and fill out treatment sheets correctly
  • Be proficient in surgical preparation, anesthesia administration and monitoring, and recovery of surgical patients
  • Assist in recovery of surgical patients, intervening if post op problems arise and notifying veterinarian immediately of complications
  • Checking all patients before patients leave vet office for the day to ensure no outward signs of possible complications
  • Reviewing discharge instructions with private clients
  • Ensure that the surgical area, treatment area and recovery are clean at the end of day and ready for the next day
  • Wrap and autoclave surgical packs
  • Be familiar with and regularly maintain surgical and operating equipment including anesthesia machines, autoclave, and surgical instruments

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Experience working as a medical technician or veterinary assistant
  • Experience handling dogs and cats
  • Proficiency in google suite is preferred
  • Ability to work with medical clinic management systems
  • Ability to work with others in a collaborative and faced paced environment
  • Some weekend work is required

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $13.00 - $15.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
