Position Objective:

  • Plan and direct services related to Health Information Management (HIM) in accordance with applicable legal, professional, and accreditation standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management:

  • Provide leadership and management expertise for all management and staff in Luminis Health HIM.
  • Develop, organize, manage, and direct departmental activities, establish work priorities, and develop goals and objectives.
  • Direct departmental quality assurance and risk management programs and ensure correction of deficiencies.
  • Develop and revise policies, procedures, and job descriptions according to Luminis Health guidelines.
  • Serve as an internal advisor on health information management issues.

Compliance and Integrity:

  • Ensure patient medical records are maintained in compliance with all laws, government regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Maintain the integrity of the master patient index and collaborate with other departments to improve compliance with patient identification functions.
  • Develop procedures and standards to ensure the confidentiality of patient health information and provide timely and appropriate release of medical information.

Operational Management:

  • Design, implement, and manage programs to provide accurate, timely, and compliant coding and abstracting services.
  • Oversee management of accounts receivables and manage staffing resources to accommodate daily patient volume.
  • Prepare and utilize the annual operating budget for the HIM department and capital expense requests.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with national and local HIM associations and educational institutions.

Collaboration and Improvement:

  • Work collaboratively with the Clinical Document Improvement (CDI) function/department/staff.
  • Lead and participate in administrative and medical staff committees, task forces, and work groups.
  • Apply performance improvement methodologies (LEAN) to health information management and other processes throughout the health system.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in health information management, business administration, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 5 to 7 years of progressive Director-level experience in an acute care setting.
  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) is required at the time of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of AHIMA, AAMT Practice Standards, legal regulatory and policy requirements including CMS, Joint Commission, COMAR, OCR, HIPAA, HITECH, AHA coding guidelines, and HSCRC reporting requirements.
  • Technical knowledge of electronic health record systems, preferably Epic.
  • Proficiency in Windows, Microsoft Office, and software tools for presentations, data analysis, trending, and communication.
  • Strong analytical skills for resolving complex clinical, financial, and patient-centric systems and applications issues.
  • Expert communication skills for engaging employees, direct reports, peers, medical staff, executive team, customers, and vendors.

  • Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
  • Reasonable expectation of no exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
