Position Summary:
  • The Education Specialist provides coordination and linguistic and technical support for enrolling clients in appropriate English Language Learning (ELL) classes. This program requires an experienced individual to actively teach refugees ESL, job readiness, and cultural orientation classes for approximately 40 hours per week.
Job Duties:
  • Teach employment readiness classes and cultural orientation for newly arrived refugees, conducting pre-and post-assessments to track understanding and adjust as necessary.
  • Coordinate internally with Interpreters, Case Managers, Employment Specialists, & Supervisors on scheduling, adding case notes, and completing proper documentation as instructed.
  • As applicable, teach participants basic technology related to Zoom and other online platforms to facilitate virtual sessions.
  • Conduct ELL placement tests for clients enrolling in classes to ensure they are placed in the appropriate level class and for those already attending to be tested for higher-level placement.
  • Build relationships with ELL providers, schools, employers, and community agencies for program participants and education speakers across Nebraska & Iowa.
  • Teach ESL to non-English speaking populations using established and recognized best practices.
  • Integrate the provided curriculum and previous experience in ESL classes.
  • Closely monitor attendance records for all clients at ELL and ensure regular follow-up occurs for those not attending regularly.
  • Maintain relationships with community partners such as EQUUS Workforce Solution and Central Community College to accommodate ELL students.
  • Coordinate with local subject matter experts in safety, health, transportation, education, finances, community support services, civics, and other relevant subjects.
  • Attend and represent LFS at community meetings.
  • Assist clients in enrolling in college courses and GED programs, as appropriate.
  • Collect, maintain, and report data from clients and other agencies to accurately track and record milestones, performance, and accomplishments.
  • Complete program reports and enter client data into spreadsheets and other relevant databases as needed.
  • Promote classes to immigrant and ELL communities and the broader community.
  • Maintain records on each course and participants, including but not limited to participation, progress, and impediments to employment. Ensure that all office and client record security procedures are followed.
  • Maintain a positive, respectful demeanor in all contacts with staff and the public.
  • Participate in ongoing training opportunities for refugee employment and language skills that promote the program's professional development and growth.
  • Maintain a current understanding of program requirements.
  • Receive, track, and maintain arrivals and referrals to education programming.
  • Develop & customize classes for Cuban Haitian paroles and other populations as needed.
  • Take over employment and case management cases as needed.
  • Support current staff with Walk-ins as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Regular and predictable attendance and promptness for work.
  • Travel as needed to central Nebraska, such as Kearney and Grand Island.

Education and Experience:
  • At least two years of experience teaching ESL classes; experience teaching refugee populations is preferable.
  • College-level coursework in Human Services is required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of local ELL providers, colleges, and other educational institutes.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Valid driver’s license, liability auto insurance, and ability to drive personal vehicle for agency business.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of standing while teaching.
  • In-person work environment with remote opportunities as available (classes are taught in person)
  • Company-issued laptop and cellphone.
