Mackinnon & Partners is Hiring a Director of Power Marketing & Origination Near Los Angeles, CA

We are seeking a qualified professional for the role of Director, Power Marketing and Origination. This pivotal position involves overseeing our client’s electricity market portfolio, focusing on optimizing asset revenue through PPA management and trading strategies. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in electricity markets and regulations, with a proven ability to cultivate relationships with PPA off-takers. Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data management are essential, along with the capability to collaborate effectively across teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Revenue Optimization: Lead the contracting program and energy bidding strategy to achieve or exceed revenue targets outlined in the operating budget. Direct negotiations of Power Purchase Agreements and Confirms.
  • Bidding Strategies: Evaluate and adjust CAISO day-ahead, real-time, and ancillary services market strategies to maximize merchant revenues and mitigate risks.
  • Contract Negotiation: Structure, negotiate, and finalize long-term structured power purchase agreements and other revenue contracts.
  • Market Engagement: Maintain relationships with key power off-takers, identify opportunities through RFT and RFP processes, and explore new energy project development opportunities nationwide.
  • Financial Modeling: Collaborate with the Investments team to integrate offtake structures into financial models.
  • Research and Analysis: Own power price forecasts, maintain consultant relationships, and stay informed about utility IRPs, state RPS mandates, and other regulatory trends. Present research findings to internal stakeholders.
  • Cross-functional Coordination: Act as a subject matter expert, collaborating with Development, Investments, and other departments to commercialize projects effectively.
  • Performance Analytics: Analyze the financial impact of energy production scenarios in coordination with Asset Operations and Performance Engineering. Maintain historical power price data.
  • Communication: Demonstrate strong communication skills in interactions with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring accurate reporting of operational activities.
  • Risk Management: Support Asset Operations in compliance with project agreements, including Power Purchase Agreements and REC Agreements. Recommend risk strategies to key stakeholders and execute trades accordingly.
  • Financial Compliance: Work with investment, accounting, and legal teams to prepare and submit required deliverables.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5 years’ experience in power marketing, origination, renewable energy consulting, or related fields
  • Experience with CAISO operations strongly preferred
  • Previous involvement with merchant energy projects and Solar Storage projects preferred
  • Familiarity with Day Ahead scheduling required

Skills and Competencies:

  • Expertise in structuring and negotiating offtake deals, including financial hedges and swaps
  • Strong track record in identifying, negotiating, and executing commercial transactions
  • Preferential experience with energy retailers in deregulated markets
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build effective relationships with stakeholders
  • Thorough understanding of energy markets, particularly ISO-NE, NYISO, and PJM
  • Ability to work with public and governmental agencies for securing offtake
  • Proficiency in financial modeling and creative structuring strategies
  • Strong problem-solving, resourcefulness, creativity, and leadership abilities
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills with high attention to detail
