Position Overview

Manual work involving the custodial care of public buildings and premises. Employee performs cleaning and minor maintenance work in public buildings. Primary responsibility is for the use of proper methods and materials in cleaning and otherwise caring for buildings and equipment. Employee works under close supervision and follows a well-established routine.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)
  • Scrubs, mops, waxes, and polishes floors.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture.
  • Washes windows, woodwork, and fixtures.
  • Cleans and maintains facility restrooms.
  • Vacuums carpeted areas.
  • Performs related cleaning as required.
  • Moves office furniture and equipment.
  • Replaces burned out light bulbs, replenishes restroom supplies, and assists in making simple repairs to buildings and equipment as required.
  • Sweeps and cleans walkways, mows lawns, rakes leaves, and generally assists in keeping outside premises in an orderly condition.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of any level of primary or secondary education that did not result in the awarding of a high school diploma or an equivalency diploma.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Some knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Physical Requirements
  • Physical strength and ability to push, pull, and lift various pieces of equipment and furniture up to a weight of 75 pounds.
  • Perform a variety of routine manual tasks in the care, cleaning and limited maintenance of buildings and equipment.
  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
Certifications or Licenses Required
  • Must have a valid Alabama Drivers license.
Work Schedule
  • 4:00 pm - 12:30 am
  • Monday - Friday

Dental Coverage : Dental coverage is included with LGHIP through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. LGHIP manages dental costs and provides enhanced dental benefits using negotiated discounts with in-network dentists. To locate in-network dentists go to www.bcbsal.com. Assuming the services are covered you will normally only be responsible for out of pocket.

Life Insurance: Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.
Employee Retirement Plans : Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have an accelerated contribution schedule
*Employer contribution percentage is set by the Retirement Systems of Alabama and changes annually.

Employee Clinic: Madison County employees and dependents over age 12 may use the Employee Health Clinic for the low co-pay of $15.00 per visit. To be eligible to use the clinic, the employee and dependent must be enrolled in Madison County's health insurance plan as their primary coverage.
