Work Schedule: Tuesday - Friday 4:00 pm - 12:00 am and Saturday 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm; occasional reassignment. Work schedule is subject to change if the school calendar start time changes.

About Our District

The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 27,000 students. More than half are students of color. Almost half come from low income households. Nearly one third are English Language Learners, and more than 100 languages are represented in our schools. Purpose of Position

Under general supervision and acting in a lead capacity assists, trains and directs the work of custodians assigned to the building. The duties listed below are commonly performed. This list is not exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required to complete as assigned.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan and prioritize the work of the custodial team based upon specific building activities and needs on a daily basis aligned to timely pre-determined District standards

  • Perform the duties of a Custodian Worker I, Custodian II, and the Building Custodian and set a standard of performance by modeling excellent work

  • Problem solve issues related to custodial services with school and building services staff

  • Cover for the Building Custodian as needed

  • Organize and direct the work of second shift Custodial staff

  • Monitor and communicate maintenance needs to appropriate staff

  • Monitor use of facilities by groups issued a building permit and establish appropriate work activities based upon permits

  • Perform outdoor duties including, but not limited to, trash pick-up, landscaping, mowing, string trimming, snow removal, ice removal, salting, sanding, and other seasonal maintenance

  • Check and secure the building at the end of the shifts

  • Enter and effectively process work orders and building permits

  • Train and direct the day-to-day work of custodial worker(s)

  • Provide feedback to Building Custodian and Custodian Supervisors regarding area inspections and Custodian I and II performance

  • Respond timely to all communication received (e.g., email, voice messages)

  • Carry and respond to any assigned district-provided communication devices (e.g., phones, radio)

  • Working varied shifts/locations as assigned as needed.

  • Review, enter, and sign off tasks for completion (e.g., work orders, preventative maintenance) in EAM as required

  • Work requires walking, lifting, climbing, bending, reaching, and kneeling

  • Dress appropriately per Employee Handbook section 3.29, with Photo I.D. visible and ensure custodial staff meets this requirement

  • Perform a variety of related duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and professionally with and serve school district personnel, students, and the community

  • Ability to read, follow directions, and maintain accurate records

  • Ability to motivate and encourage staff to complete assignments timely and accurately

  • Ability to maintain general mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing independently or willingness to learn and develop the ability to do so

  • Ability to clearly communicate in English for emergency response situations

  • Knowledge of general building maintenance and repair including building systems such as HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.

  • Skill in leading and directing others with at least one year of experience working in a lead worker position

  • Skill and demonstrated success in managing multiple priorities in a timely manner

  • Skill in planning, prioritizing, and executing the work activities of the custodial team

  • Knowledge and appropriate use of cleaning materials, solutions, and procedures

  • Knowledge of entering and handling work orders and building permits

Minimum Qualifications

  • Six months custodial experience with MMSD

  • Experience training, coaching, and providing input to the evaluation of staff on custodian techniques and proper procedures

  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural competence (i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas)

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation

  • Demonstrated willingness to fill in for a Building Custodian I or II


Physical and Sensory Requirements:

  • This job is physically demanding - medium to heavy work.

  • There is constant standing, walking, and moving depending on day to day tasks. There will be frequent pushing and pulling of loads up to 70 pounds. There is frequent bending, stooping, and utilizing proper lifting techniques loads up to 50 pounds. There is frequent sitting, driving, squatting, crouching, ladder and stair climbing, able to handle 10 ft heights, crawling, reaching, kneeling, lifting up to 75 pounds, and repetitive movements with both hands. Verbal and auditory communication is frequently used. Near and far vision acuity, depth perception, accommodation, field of vision, and feeling are frequently utilized.
