Magellan Learning Solutions is Hiring an Assistant Instructional Designer, Part Time Near Lynchburg, VA

The Assistant Instructional Designer works closely with Instructional Designers (IDs) in developing and supporting online courses. The Assistant Instructional Designer (AID) is responsible for many of the technical aspects of course design and delivery, including populating course sections within the learning management system, updating content as needed, assuring the full functionality of all elements of the course, identifying and correcting errors found in the course, offering feedback on course design, and supporting subject matter experts (SME) and other team members on technical issues. The AID stays current with and advises the team on educational technologies and best practices for technology-supported online pedagogy and performs other duties as assigned.

The Assistant Instructional Designer must possess the following skills:

  • Collaboration – the AID works as part of a team, including subject matter experts, IDs, and course editors, to develop and deliver online content.
  • Technological Expertise – the AID serves as the point person for technological issues during the process of course development and delivery.
  • Expertise – the AID advises other team members on the appropriate and effective use of technology to support student learning and success.
  • Project Implementation – the AID completes work on a deadline, within a series of interlocking processes, to ensure the timely and effective delivery of course content.
  • Advanced Language/Writing Skills – Experience with editing and proofreading college-level English for clarity, consistency, style, spelling, grammar, and tone. Degree in English, Communication or the humanities is preferred but not required.

Effective Assistant Instructional Designers are task-focused and strategic team members. They work well with others but can complete tasks independently. They operate within an "improvement" mindset, offering solutions to problems and suggestions for growth. While high-level technical expertise is not required, experience with Microsoft products and MAC OS, rapid authoring tools (Camtasia, Canva, Articulate Storyline, etc.), and learning management systems (Blackboard, Canvas, etc.) is highly desirable.

Part-time AIDs work 25 hours/week and are eligible for company benefits including paid vacation and retirement. Magellan will train AIDs.
