The Opportunity 

The Product Development and Engineering roles are core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As a Staff Integration Engineer on Magic Leap's Waveguide R&D team, you will be responsible for technical coordination of waveguide R&D programs. These programs engage internal and external disciplines ranging from semiconductor processing of waveguide masters, diffractive designs, front and back end fabrication technologies, dimensional and optical metrology, to light engine integration to deliver state-of-the-art, next-generation waveguides that are strategic to Magic Leap’s success. The Integration Engineer’s role is to maximize coordination and collaboration between these teams to ensure the performance of the waveguide.

This position is based at our site in Austin, TX.

What You Do 

  • Own overall process flow, yield, and performance of waveguide R&D projects
  • Present results and make pivotal decisions/recommendations to technical program management and senior technology and business leaders
  • Performs feasibility studies and collaborates with the R&D team to develop process and metrology technology readiness plans to meet program deliverables
  • Plans and conducts experiments to fully characterize the process throughout the development cycle
  • Analyze test data and work with technical owners to identify the root cause of waveguide and process performance issues and drive performance improvements to meet challenging timelines
  • Own engineering projects in waveguide mastering, fabrication, and optical metrology to deliver product quality and improve waveguide performance and yield
  • Support the development of business processes to improve throughput and outcomes of projects in the future
  • Drive continuous improvement in development processes and build infrastructure for the waveguide R&D team

The experience you already have

  • 7 years of industry experience in optical components or sub-systems
  • MS or Ph.D. in engineering, optics, physics, or related fields
  • Ability to tackle and understand complex systems and problems that span multiple disciplines
  • Ability to demonstrate statistical data analysis skills
  • Experience developing custom data analysis
  • Knowledge of image analysis and methods of taking measurements from images
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
