Main Salvation Army is Hiring a Senior Accountant Near Seattle, WA

DEPARTMENT: FINANCE

SUPERVISOR: Controller

STATUS: Regular/ Full-Time-Exempt

COMPENSATION: $75,000- 80,000

A generous benefits package is included with full-time positions: paid holidays, vacation time, sick time, and medical, vision, and dental insurance.

Health Insurance: Low bi-weekly premiums for employee-only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside a Kaiser service area. Voluntary 1 and family coverage at additional cost. Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance are offered. 

Life and Voluntary Options. An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.

Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.

Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months’ service time. 

Paid Vacation:

  • Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions.
  • Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions.
  • Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months’ service time.

Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays 1 floating holiday per year

GENERAL STATEMENT:

The Salvation Army is a branch of the Christian Church, and the goal of all programs is the spiritual regeneration of all people.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

PREFERRED: Bachelor of Science in Accounting or Business Administration and three or more years of “hands-on” experience in a business computer accounting environment.

  1. REQUIRED SKILLS:

Accounting: Possess a general understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and FASB Standards pertinent to The Salvation Army.

Computer: The ability to operate within a computer environment is essential, as is a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and E-mail.

Office: The ability to operate 10-key by touch and other standard office equipment efficiently is necessary.

Organization: The ability to address multiple projects in a time-sensitive manner.

Professional: The ability to present oneself professionally and maintain confidentiality and sensitivity in relation to information and documentation.

Personal: The ability to interact with both co-workers and management positively.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the initial setup and maintenance of all financial accounting records related to the operation of multiple corps sites in the Northwest & Alaska Divisions. The accounting for these corps sites is done at DHQ by DHQ Finance department staff. The Accountant will also be responsible forpreparing and submittingf all financial reports required by The Salvation Army per established policy and procedure andkeepingp Salvation Army management informed of the current financial condition of the operation. Limited travel to the different sites may be required. The accountant is responsible for financial analysis and presentation of the corps' financial condition to the DFS, Controller & GL team monthly.

DEFINITION OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Accountant’s responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Maintenance of General Ledger included responsibility formonth-endd closings and required journal entries.
  2. Responsible for reconciling General Ledger to the Portfolio donor management system every month.
  3. Responsible for the accuracy of all Accounts Payable functions, including promptly entering all invoices and payments.
  4. Responsible for the accuracy of all Accounts Receivable functions, including promptly counting, depositing, and recording of receivables.
  5. Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of Government billings and follow-up with the collection of the Receivables
  6. Responsible for generating all Month End Financial Reports and any interim reports requested by administration by the 10th working day of the following month.
  7. Responsible for the maintenance and record-keeping associated with Custodian and subsidiary accounts.
  8. Responsible for accurately filing all pertinent accounting documents promptly.
  9. Responsible for peer review and approval of general journals of one other accountant.
  10. Responsible for assisting management in the Budgeting
  11. Responsible for preparing materials requested in connection with Audits conducted by Independent outside auditors and Salvation Army internal auditors.
  12. Any other duties assigned by the department managers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects such as files and file cabinet drawers and reach overhead
  • Ability to operate a telephone
  • Ability to use a desktop or laptop computer
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. (usually file boxes)
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer
  • Ability to understand written information
