Position Summary
The MTSS Coach at Making Waves Academy (MWA) assumes an important senior leadership role within our educational community. Collaborating closely with the Principal, Assistant Principals, teachers, and support staff, this individual is instrumental in driving the successful adoption and seamless integration of Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) practices throughout the school. This dynamic and visionary leader is committed to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment that supports all students' academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs. Focused on equity and inclusion, the MTSS Coach works with school leadership to craft and refine comprehensive frameworks tailored to the diverse needs of our students and staff, ensuring every student receives the necessary support to excel academically, behaviorally, and socially.
Primary ResponsibilitiesMTSS and PBIS Framework Development and Implementation

  • Lead the development, refinement, and implementation of a comprehensive MTSS and PBIS framework that addresses academic, behavioral, and social needs, aligning with the school's mission and goals.
  • Collaborate with school leadership, teachers, and stakeholders to assess current practices, identify areas for improvement, and set clear goals and benchmarks for MTSS and PBIS.
  • Develop and maintain resources, tools, and materials to support MTSS and PBIS implementation, including data collection tools, intervention protocols, and behavior management strategies.
Observation, Coaching, and Capacity Building
  • Observe teachers and staff in classrooms, providing feedback based on MTSS and PBIS rubrics with a focus on Tier 1 support.
  • Provide personalized coaching to individual teachers and groups to deliver tailored support. As appropriate, these groups may encompass both instructional and non-instructional staff.
  • Facilitate professional learning communities (PLCs) focused on MTSS and PBIS, where educators can share best practices, analyze student data, and collaborate on intervention planning.
  • Provide ongoing training, coaching, and support to school staff on MTSS and PBIS principles, practices, and strategies.
Collaboration, Communication, and Family Engagement
  • Collaborate with school leadership, teachers, support staff, families, and community partners to align MTSS and PBIS efforts with school-wide goals.
  • Communicate with all stakeholders to promote understanding, buy-in, and engagement.
  • Foster partnerships with families and community organizations, providing resources and training to support students' holistic development.
  • Organize workshops and events for families on MTSS, PBIS, and student support topics.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and other school administrators to coordinate and oversee evidence-based interventions, ensuring tailored support that meets each student's unique needs.
Data Analysis and Decision-Making
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret student data in partnership with the MTSS team to identify trends, bright spots, areas of need, and opportunities for intervention.
  • Utilize data to adjust and refine MTSS and PBIS strategies and to inform decision-making at various levels.
  • Collaborate with the data team to maintain a comprehensive data management system for timely data collection, organization, and analysis.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of MTSS and PBIS practices and interventions, integrating new research and trends to drive innovation and improvement.

  • Participate in the school community – attending school competitions, performances, assemblies, and extracurricular activities.

Work EnvironmentThis job operates in an office environment but will require frequent classroom observations and support. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers, portable two-way radio transceivers, and smartphones.Physical DemandsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to adhere to the following:
  • Frequently walk across the middle and upper school campus, or climb stairs.
  • Participate in campus supervision duty each week – Monday through Friday frequency may vary based on each semester’s supervision assignment.
  • Lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand on a stool as necessary, and sit for long periods.
TravelSome travel is required for MWA-related events, such as workshops or conferences.QualificationsExperience
  • 5-7 years of experience implementing MTSS and PBIS frameworks in an educational setting, demonstrating a deep understanding of the principles, frameworks, and best practices, with the ability to customize and adapt these concepts to meet the unique needs of our school community.
  • 5-7 years of experience in education, with a strong background in implementing evidence-based practices to support student learning and development.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and communication skills to manage multiple stakeholders, including school leadership, teachers, support staff, families, and community partners, ensuring alignment and collaboration to achieve initiative objectives.
  • Experience working in diverse educational settings, preferably with students from underserved communities or with diverse learning needs.
  • Experience providing professional development and coaching to educators.
  • Experience facilitating observation and feedback cycles with teachers.
  • Experience coaching or supporting teachers in Common Core standards align planning.
Skills
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data-driven decision-making, with experience using assessment data to inform MTSS and PBIS planning and intervention strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport, establish trust, and collaborate effectively with various community members, including students, families, staff, and community partners.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
  • Proven ability to design and deliver high-quality professional development sessions and facilitate meaningful learning experiences for adult learners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong ability to analyze data and utilize it to drive instruction.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to laterally manage a diverse group of constituents.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, with experience leading change initiatives, building consensus, and mobilizing others around a shared vision or goal.
Education
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, School Psychology, Counseling, or a related field.
  • California Teaching Credential or commensurate experience leading teachers.
Licenses or Certificates Needed
  • Employment eligibility will include fingerprints, tuberculosis, and other employment clearances
Preferred but not required
  • Valid California teaching credential or license; additional certification or coursework in MTSS, PBIS, special education, school psychology, or related areas.
