The position works closely with Environmental Services Department leadership and landfill maintenance staff to ensure landfills are maintained and managed properly. We Require
Four years of experience in an environmental or regulatory field
Completion of a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, toxicology, chemistry, or a related field
An equivalent combination of post-secondary education in environmental science, biology, toxicology, chemistry, or a related field and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis

Job Contributions
Conducts groundwater, landfill gas, and other environmental sampling activities. Manages and coordinates with Department vendors on environmental sampling activities when necessary. Analyzes laboratory data to ensure parameters are within acceptable requirements and to make recommendations to the Director on preventative actions. Manages and maintains records related to landfill compliance and monitoring activities
Performs or manages routine field inspections at all former landfill and transfer station facilities to ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations. Identifies and prevents violations at landfills and transfer stations. Works collaboratively with Department staff to manage facilities and implement long-term maintenance and operations plans
Oversees and coordinates remediation activities at former landfills to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Works with Risk Management and Department leadership to ensure remediation activities, reports, and documents are performed with a high level of accuracy. Provides recommendations and guidance to leadership on a course of action. Assesses risks associated with landfills and provides proposals and recommendations to mitigate them
Presents to leadership on remediation and environmental compliance-related activities. Work with internal and external stakeholders on remediation and environmental compliance projects. Coordinate and participate in public outreach and communication strategies when necessary. Manage internal and external stakeholder relationships
Create charts, tables, and graphs; use spreadsheets, databases, and report-writing software to develop periodic reports. Present data to leadership with recommendations on a proposed course of action and its impact or risk to the County
Participates in and stays current with new environmental rules and requirements that may impact the Department and its facilities. Represents the Department at environmental compliance workgroups and meetings. Briefs and presents leadership on environmental compliance activities and emerging issues
Maintains sampling tools, equipment, and instruments used for environmental compliance activities and ensures they are properly calibrated or certified when necessary. Evaluate new technology and present recommendations on its use
Creates and maintains standard operating procedures for environmental compliance activities. Ensures the Department obtains required permits for former landfill and transfer station facilities. Develops and maintains maintenance and capital improvement plans for all landfills and transfer stations
Participates in annual budget planning and in the procurement process to select vendors, materials, and services when necessary. Assists finance with managing contracts and projects assigned to vendors
Performs other duties as assigned or required
